Wicket-keeper Michael Burgess has enjoyed a great start to the Metro Bank One Day Cup with seven dismissals in two games.
But modest ‘Burgy’ – who took a jaw-dropping one-handed catch against Gloucestershire on Monday – has heaped praise on Warwickshire’s bowling attack for creating the chances for him to shine.
The 29-year-old – who’s also taken 31 LV= Insurance County Championship catches – said technical adjustments he’s made to his work behind the stumps have paid dividends.
He added: “I’ve been happy with my keeping. I think sometimes the batting has been a bit frustrating. I consider myself an all-rounder, you try to contribute however you can.
“I’ve made a few technical tweaks this season to my keeping that have gone well, and hopefully the batting comes together at the back end of the season and I finish stronger.
“You always try to contribute as a wicketkeeper, but you only get chances to take wickets if the lads are bowling well. The lads have been outstanding so I can only really thank them for giving me the opportunities.
“The bowlers are running in for 10 overs so I try my best to give them something back and say thank you for their hard work.
“It was nice to get that one-hander (to dismiss Anwar Ali off Miles) you get a bit of glory and it looks good but as I said again the bowlers have been outstanding, the way they bowled at Somerset and especially against Gloucestershire they’ve given us winning platforms.
“We’re very lucky to have an extremely talented bowling group and fingers crossed they stay fit for the rest of the comp.”
Monday’s eight-wicket win against Gloucestershire put Warwickshire top of their One Day Cup table on run rate but Burgess said talk of Trent Bridge (venue for the competition’s final) is a premature.
“Fifty overs is a great format,” he added. “We’re representing Warwickshire so we’re going to try and win every game we play, that’s the aim. Two from two is a good start but as Rhodesy reminded the lads, there’s still six games to go so it’s important we keep focus.
“You start every competition wanting to win it and getting to the final is the end goal, but we’ve a tough game next at Glamorgan in Neath on Thursday.
“We’re all excited about that, they’re a good team, and if we can go three form three maybe we’ll start thinking about Trent Bridge a bit more!”
