Black History Month: Celebrating Birmingham’s black cricketing pioneers
27 October 2023
Black History Month – we’re celebrating the pioneering black cricketers behind the Birmingham Commonwealth League that ran from 1979-95. It brought together talented players who’d arrived in the West Midlands from the Caribbean. We took former players Denzil McCarthy and Morris Lowers to Handsworth Cricket Club – the spiritual home of Birmingham Commonwealth League – on a trip down memory lane. They also joined an African Caribbean Engagement (ACE) session to see how we’re trying to rekindle a passion for cricket in the city’s black community.
