Report: Warwickshire v Glamorgan, One Day Cup

Group B pace-setters Warwickshire and Glamorgan relinquished their Metro Bank One Day Cup 100 per cent records in deeply frustrating fashion with a ‘no result’ at Edgbaston.

On a rain-lashed day in Birmingham, after a much-delayed start, a 21-overs per-side match was started and Glamorgan reached 143 for five from 18 overs amongst a series of further interruptions.

Sam Northeast (68 not out, 39 balls) powered his side to a challenging total, with Warwickshire facing a D/L target of 155 in 18 overs, but before they could embark on their chase, the rain that had haunted the Second City all day returned to kill the contest.

A point apiece leaves the two teams still strongly-placed in the Group B table. They will be hoping for better luck with their weather next Sunday when Warwickshire face Yorkshire at Rugby School.

Credit the umpires and grounds staff for at least expediting some cricket on a grey day in Birmingham.

When cricket finally began, it was effectively a T20 thrash and Glamorgan’s openers soon perished in T20 style. Kiran Carlson skied a slog at Michael Booth and was superbly caught by a diving Tazeem Ali at fine leg. William Smale’s plan to come down the wicket to Olly Hannon-Dalby was foiled by an in-ducker which struck his middle stump.

Northeast and Tom Bevan (23, 25) rebuilt with a stand of 54 in 45 balls before the latter lapped Tazeem to short fine leg. Warwickshire’s bowlers gave little away, forcing the batters to take risks, one of which cost Billy Root (21, 16) dear when he bottom-edged a cut at Tazeem on to his stumps.

Eighteen-year-old leg-spinner Tazeem bowled with impressive composure but Northeast is in good form and dealt with the poor light and drizzle to thump his way to a 32-ball half-century.

Rain returned yet again with Glamorgan on 135 for four from 17 overs and bizarrely, with more interruptions looming, when the weather briefly relented they went back out for one more over. They stretched their total to 143 for five before the ubiquitous rain brought the doomed fixture to a merciful end.

Preview: Warwickshire v Glamorgan, One Day Cup

Olly Hannon-Dalby returns to the Warwickshire side for Thursday’s (8 Aug) top of the table One Day Cup clash against Glamorgan at Edgbaston.

The 6ft 8ins seamer was rested for Sunday’s win at Gloucestershire where captain Ed Barnard’s unbeaten 152 – having earlier taken 3/16 – was the bedrock for a fifth win in five games.

But Hannon-Dalby is set for a swift return to the line-up against a Glamorgan side that’s also enjoyed an unblemished 50-over campaign and lead Group B with a superior run rate.

Glamorgan’s 100 per cent start has been built on their three-pronged seam bowling attack of Daniel Douthwaite – the top wicket taker with 15 – Andrew Gorvin and Jamie McIlroy.

Between them they’ve taken 36 wickets while veteran South African batter Colin Ingram, now aged 39, rolled back the years with an unbeaten 103 against Nottinghamshire at the end of last month.

Bears First Team Coach Mark Robinson knows his side are in for a fierce examination by their Welsh rivals.

He said: “They are a strong side, I think they’ve only lost two players to The Hundred, so we’ll be facing largely their T20 team.

“They’re in a different place to us. Our side features four teenagers who are taking their first steps in professional cricket. But they have done brilliantly in helping us maintain our unbeaten start in the competition.

“It should be a great game, an exciting game. Hopefully we’ll get a few fans in because the stage is set between the two best sides in the group so far.

“The first objective is always to get out of the group. We’re in a strong position to do that now – but topping the group gives us a home semi final and also means we avoid having to play in the quarters which would be absorbing another game into an already busy schedule.”

Fast bowlers Chris Rushworth Che Simmons are continuing their recovery from injury.

Thursday’s game comes too soon but both could be in contention to return for Bears’ final two home games at Rugby School on Sunday (11 Aug) against Yorkshire and Wednesday (14 Aug) against Notts.

Robinson added: “I’ve been really pleased with calmness and composure we’ve shown in the competition to date. And also the relationships that are developing, the nurturing of the young players by the experienced pro’s.

“Olly looking after Michael Booth, Lintott doing great work with Taz. You see the advice that Burgy and Will Rhodes are giving to Hamza and Kai Smith. The squad is looking after each other and helping develop the exciting young talents we’ve got.

“We’re generally a calm team on and off the pitch which allows for consistency of behaviour and consistency of performance. That’s something you need when you’re under pressure.”
