Edgbaston was batting to Bhangra beats as the Club staged its Vaisakhi Cricket Cup and a cultural celebration to mark the Sikh festival.
More than 50 people took part in a fun softball competition at the Edgbaston Cricket Centre before enjoying a tour of the stadium.
It’s the second running of the event that aims to introduce more people, in particular women and children, to cricket and to promote physical and mental wellbeing.
“The event brought people from our local community together through a fun day of cricket,” said Simran Riat from the Warwickshire Cricket Foundation.
“About half of the people returned from our inaugural event last year and we hope to make the Vaisakhi Cricket Cup a regular fixture on our calendar.
“One of the players said they used to love cricket at primary school but hadn’t played since as she suffers from anxiety. This was the first time she’d picked up a bat since. With the support of the coaches and fellow players, she got involved and bowled incredibly well.
“That’s what the event is all about: to inspire people to play and enjoy cricket. Hopefully it will act as a catalyst for the children and others who attended to keep playing the sport.”
Popular Birmingham DJ Will Reed performed a set during the event and guests were encouraged to show off their bhangra moves.
The Vaisakhi Cricket Cup is part of the Club’s Edgbaston for Everyone pledge to make the ground a welcoming, safe space for all and to make cricket accessible to everyone from all backgrounds.
