Birmingham Phoenix Women have appointed Ali Maiden as their Head Coach for the 2025 season.

Maiden – unveiled recently as Bears Women’s new Head Coach – replaces Ben Sawyer who was released at the end of his contract after five years at the helm.

The 42-year-old – who won the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup as England’s Assistant Coach – was part of the coaching staff that guided London Spirit to victory The Hundred Women’s Competition last summer.

Meanwhile, Dan Vettori will continue in his role as Head Coach of the Birmingham Phoenix Men.

Craig Flindall, General Manager of the Birmingham Phoenix, said he’s delighted to welcome Maiden to the Phoenix.

“Ali arrives at the Phoenix with vast experience in the women’s game,” added Flindall, “both internationally and in franchise cricket. He was selected as the new Bears Women Head Coach following a rigorous selection process so we know he is a high calibre appointment.

“2025 is very much a transitional year for the Phoenix, with new investors expected to come on board next year, and I’m sure Ali will help us through that period as we look to challenge again at the top of the table.

“I’m very grateful for everything Ben has done during his five years with Phoenix Women and everyone here wishes him all the very best for the future.”

Wordsley-born Maiden joins up with Bears Women this month having arrived from Yorkshire CCC where he’s been Batting Coach for more than two years.

He’s previously overseen the Academy and Talent Pathway at Leicestershire CCC, where he brought through England spinner Rehan Ahmed among others.
