Wicketkeeper batter Kai Smith says Michael Burgess’ shock retirement has presented an unexpected opportunity behind the stumps – and it’s one he has ambitions on filling.
Smith announced himself to Bears fans in spectacular style during the One Day Cup Quarter Final in August when he smashed 130 off 104 balls to seal a stunning victory.
It was a display that earned the then 19-year-old (he recently turned 20) the Club’s Performance of the Season award.
Next year was always going to be a big one for Smith – who averages 35.00 in 23 List A games to date – but even more so following Burgess’ decision to step away from cricket.
