Following today’s announcement, the club has paid tribute to Chris Woakes’ career as an England player and confirmed that discussions are ongoing about his future county cricket career.
Stuart Cain, Warwickshire CEO, said: “Chris has been a great servant to his country and everyone at Warwickshire is immensely proud of all his achievements. He has had a phenomenal career, winning the biggest prizes the game has to offer while always representing England with class. We are talking with him about his future in the county game and hope to make an announcement shortly.
“While his time in an England shirt has come to an end, Chris can be proud of everything he has achieved and the way he has represented himself. Hopefully this will continue whilst wearing the Bear and Ragged Staff.”
In his announcement, Woakes described his international career as living out a childhood fantasy, stating, “Playing for England was something I aspired to do since I was a kid dreaming in the back garden, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived out those dreams.”
On the world stage, Woakes established himself as the consummate professional and a world-class all-rounder. He was the player England could always depend on. His name is etched into England history with two World Cup triumphs, cementing his legacy as an international great.
In his statement, Woakes paid special tribute to the support network that helped him achieve his dreams, including those at his home county: “To my coaches, teammates and everyone behind the scenes – both with England and Warwickshire, who helped me play for my country – your guidance and friendship has meant the world.”
