Report: Essex v Bears, Vitality Blast
Essex 166 for 3 (Griffith 68, MacLeod 59) in 14.2 overs beat Warwickshire 164 for 8 (Freeborn 86*) by seven wickets.
Warwickshire Bears were beaten by Essex at Chelmsford in their opening Vitality Blast fixture, despite an impressive unbeaten 86 from Abbey Freeborn.
After being put into bat, the Bears made a steady start through Freeborn and Georgia Redmayne, who added 80 for the first wicket before Redmayne was dismissed for 36. Freeborn continued to anchor the innings throughout, carrying her bat through the full 20 overs with a composed 56-ball knock.
Essex applied pressure well through the middle and latter stages of the innings, with Warwickshire unable to build significant partnerships around Freeborn’s innings. Eva Gray and Jodi Grewcock both picked up two wickets and, at the halfway stage, the game felt evenly poised with neither side clearly on top as the Bears closed on 164.
Defending 165, Warwickshire came up against a strong Essex batting display on a quick-scoring surface. Essex skipper Grace Scrivens and Lizzie MacLeod added 39 in just 3.2 overs to seize control of the chase before Cordelia Griffith’s rapid 68 from 37 balls, alongside MacLeod’s 59 from 38, helped the hosts pull away and reach the target in 14.2 overs.
There were still positives to take for Warwickshire, particularly Freeborn’s innings and the opening partnership with Redmayne, as the Bears now turn their attention to their next Vitality Blast fixture.
