Bears’ star Jacob Bethell scored a classy maiden first class century as he helped England to 302-8 at the end of the penultimate day of the 2025/26 Ashes series.

The 22-year-old, playing in his sixth Test, walked off a sun-kissed Sydney Cricket Ground on 142* at the close on day four, with England leading by 119 runs with one day remaining.

After England cleaned up the Australian tail early on day four, the hosts’ total of 567 gave them a lead of 183.

Bethell wiped that out in stands of 81 with Ben Duckett and 134 with Harry Brook – both of whom made 42.

But after Brook was lbw on review to a sharp off-break from Beau Webster – who will again represent the Bears in 2026 after signing in 2025 – Will Jacks became the first victim in a string of quick wickets.

Jamie Smith was run out in a mix-up with Bethell, Ben Stokes poked to slip and Brydon Carse edged the superb Scott Boland as England lost five wickets for 78 runs.

It left Matthew Potts in the company of Bethell, who was the clear shining light in England’s final innings of the series. After scything away 15 fours on his way to his outstanding unbeaten 142, he soaked in the acclaim of the boisterous Barmy Army as their new hero.

If Bethell was the leading English light, then Bears’ team-mate Webster was the pick of the Australian bowlers.

The 32-year-old took three wickets at an economy of 3.92, removing Brook, Jacks and England skipper Stokes, and will be looking to wrap up his five-for when England return to the crease on day five.
