Warwickshire’s pre-season preparations took a significant step forward on Saturday as the squad enjoyed a double-header of T20 friendlies at the iconic Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town.
Playing beneath the picturesque backdrop of Table Mountain, the primary focus for the day was getting crucial time out in the middle, managing player workloads, and allowing the squad to adjust their skills on outdoor turf wickets.
“It’s been a nice start,” said Keith Barker following the day’s action. “It’s good for the lads to get outdoors, get running on actual grass rather than the indoor school. It’s nice to do it in a great place as well, so I couldn’t be happier.”
While the Bears secured victories in both fixtures against Sussex/Northants combined XIs, the true value of the day lay in the rhythm and match fitness gained across the travelling party.

In the opening fixture, the bowling unit blew away the cobwebs, putting in a disciplined shift with the ball. Nathan Gilchrist was a standout performer, claiming an impressive 3-18 from his four overs. In reply, several Bears batters were able to spend valuable time at the crease. Vansh Jani (29) and new arrival Jordan Thompson (26) laid a solid foundation before Theo Wylie’s unbeaten 30 off 16 balls steered the team to 136/6, comfortably seeing the team home.
The batting group truly found their timing in the second match. Rob Yates looked in scintillating touch, striking 67 from just 35 balls – an innings that included nine fours and two sixes. He was matched by Sam Hain, who blasted 61 off 29 deliveries, clearing the ropes four times to help propel Warwickshire to a formidable 195/8.
The bowling attack then backed up the batters’ efforts, rotating through their options and getting overs into the legs to successfully stifle the run chase.
With crucial miles in the legs and confidence building, the squad is carrying great momentum as they look ahead to the rest of the tour and the rapidly approaching English summer.
Performance Director James Thomas has been with the squad in South Africa and noted the positive atmosphere in the camp: “There’s a real buzz… everyone’s excited. We’ve brought some new additions in at the back end of the season and over the winter, so everyone’s ready to go. We’re looking forward to Surrey on the 3rd of April.”
