University of Birmingham will remove all barriers to entry for budding young cricketers on the Warwickshire County Cricket Club Pathway after being announced as the Lead Partner of the Pathway and the Official University Partner of Warwickshire County Cricket Club.

The partnership reflects a shared ambition to nurture the next generation of sporting talent across the region. As part of a multi-year agreement, the University’s support will see Warwickshire deliver a comprehensive Pathway programme, which is free for all parents – one of the only counties to do so. Every player will receive free playing kit and pay zero programme fees, removing financial barriers and enabling greater inclusion across the talent development structure.

The excellence of the University’s expertise in sports science and data science will also support performance research for both the Warwickshire men’s and women’s cricket.

The announcement comes as the University of Birmingham celebrates a landmark year for sport. Ranked in the top 10 institutions in the world for sport-related studies in the prestigious QS World University Rankings, the University is also marking the 80th anniversary of teaching physical education and sport, having become the first university in the UK to teach PE in 1946. That pioneering legacy has evolved into a world-class portfolio of programmes today, spanning Sports and Exercise Science, High Performance Sport, Sports Business, Management and Leadership, and Sport Data Science and AI.

The University is renowned for its commitment to supporting sport at every level, from elite high-performance athletes through its EDCAP dual career provision, which enables athletes to balance competitive sporting careers with academic study, to university-level and recreational sports participation, ensuring that sport is accessible, inclusive, and enriching for all.

Professor Deborah Longworth, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education at the University of Birmingham, said: “We are delighted to become the Official University Partner of Warwickshire County Cricket Club and Lead Partner of the Warwickshire CCC Pathway. This partnership reflects the University of Birmingham’s deep commitment to the region and our belief that education and sport share the power to transform lives.

“As we celebrate 80 years since becoming the first university in the UK to teach physical education, and as a top 10 institution in the world for sport, we are proud that this partnership embodies the values at the heart of everything we do – supporting the development of excellence and character in sport from grassroots participation to elite performance.

“By funding the Pathway playing kit, we are proud to support emerging talent, help remove barriers to participation, and support the delivery of the most inclusive pathway for future Bears. We hope every young person on the Pathway feels a strong sense of belonging and confidence in what they can achieve, and we look forward to seeing them thrive as part of the Bears family.”

James Thomas, Performance Director at Warwickshire County Cricket Club, said: “Removing financial barriers to access sport and education is a critical step in making sure every talented young cricketer in our region has a genuine opportunity to fulfil their potential. This partnership with the University of Birmingham will make a meaningful difference to our Pathway by providing players with the support, kit and expertise they need to thrive.

“The added benefit of the University’s strength in performance sport and data science will further enhance our high-performance environment, and we’re hugely excited by what this can deliver.”

Adam Lowe, Commercial Director at Warwickshire, said: “Partnering with the University of Birmingham represents a significant commercial investment in the future of Warwickshire cricket. By becoming Lead Partner of the Pathway, the University is helping us remove barriers for young players and make Warwickshire one of the most accessible pathways in the country.

“This partnership brings two globally recognised brands together, with a shared commitment to excellence and will bring substantial added value through access to world‑class research, innovation and facilities. It’s a partnership that will not only benefit our players, but also the wider community impact of the Club for years to come.”

Warwickshire County Cricket Club welcomed the partnership as a significant step forward in enhancing accessibility and providing best-in-class development opportunities for young cricketers.

The University of Birmingham logo will appear on the sleeve of all kits from the 2026 season. The collaboration will also open opportunities across performance research, student experience, placements, and community outreach, further integrating the two institutions in support of cricket across the West Midlands.
