Warwickshire Bears have fought off competition from around the world to secure the overseas signing of spinner Usman Tariq for the 2026 Vitality Blast campaign.

The 30-year-old spinner had offers to play franchise cricket in various leagues across the globe but the Bears have secured his signature in a move which will see him remain at Edgbaston Stadium for the majority of the summer, as his Blast duties will be followed by The Hundred campaign with Birmingham Phoenix.

Tariq has become one of the most feared bowlers in white ball cricket after bursting onto the scene in recent years and his signing will give the Bears a boost ahead of the Vitality Blast season, which begins in just 17 days.

Tariq rose through domestic cricket before gaining international attention in global franchise leagues, including the Pakistan Super League, Caribbean Premier League, ILT20, and Abu Dhabi T10, during which his performances caught the eye of Pakistan selectors and earned him an international debut in 2025. Since his debut against South Africa, he has taken 18 wickets in his nine matches at 6.66.

A right-arm spinner, Tariq has become known for providing a point of difference in high-pressure moments with his ability to turn a game on its head, and will complement the Bears’ deep seam bowling unit and current spin options.

Bears’ Performance Director James Thomas said: “Usman is exactly the type of high-impact player we want to bring into Warwickshire, so we’re delighted to get this deal completed.

“His skill set and tactical awareness make him a genuine threat in modern white-ball cricket, but it’s his hunger to compete and continually improve that really stands out.

“What makes this signing particularly exciting is the alignment between Warwickshire and Birmingham Phoenix. Bringing Usman into the Bears for the Vitality Blast, before transitioning into The Hundred with the Phoenix, reflects the strength of our integrated model across club and franchise.

“It allows us to create continuity for the player, maximise performance impact across both competitions, and build stronger connections with our supporters in Birmingham and Warwickshire. Ultimately, this is about strengthening the team, the franchise, and our presence in the area and we believe Usman can play a key role in that this summer.”

Tariq said: “I am very excited to bring more fun and energy to the Bears. I can’t wait to get involved with the squad and it’s a great feeling to be part of this team. I hope to see as many people as possible at Edgbaston this summer.”

The Bears’ season officially gets underway on Friday 22 May, when both men’s and women’s teams hit the road for their opening matches, with the men away to Gloucestershire in Bristol, and the women away to Essex in Chelmsford, before the attention turns to Edgbaston two days later for the first home matchday of the campaign.

The People’s Home of Cricket will host a huge Blast Off double header as both the men’s and women’s Bears welcome Somerset, who won the men’s Vitality Blast in 2025. The event marks the first of five home double-headers in the 2026 schedule and is expected to draw one of the biggest crowds of the summer as both teams launch their home seasons together in style.
