Warwickshire host Yorkshire at Edgbaston Stadium this week, in the latest round of Rothesay County Championship fixtures. Taking place from Friday 8 May to Monday 11 May, here’s what you need to know…
Bears’ form guide (last three)
L-W-D
After a busy start to the campaign, the Bears were without a fixture last week, so have had a week to prepare for the visit of Yorkshire, with the side looking forward to a return to action after impressing in their last two outings. Firstly, they produced a fine performance to pick up a first win of the campaign at home to Essex, before pushing last year’s champions, Nottinghamshire, all the way at Trent Bridge, with both sides eventually settling for a draw.
On that occasion, Warwickshire had amassed 459 in the first innings, thanks to a brilliant 165 from captain Ed Barnard, before the Bears bowled Notts out for 279 in their first innings. Forced to follow on, the Outlaws ended proceedings 537 for seven, with Warwickshire taking 16 points from the tie, a result that at the time saw them hit the summit of the Rothesay County Championship table. Following last weekend’s results, Warwickshire remain towards the top of the table in fourth, 12 points off top spot.
Three in focus
Ed Barnard
Barnard has started the 2026 campaign as he ended 2025, with runs and wickets to his name, but this time as captain of the Bears. The 30-year-old was in exceptional form in the Rothesay County Championship last term, ending the season as Warwickshire’s leading run scorer with 922 runs and 29 wickets. Having been named captain across all formats at the start of the year, he already has 275 runs to his name, thanks largely to the 165 he scored against Nottinghamshire last month.
Ethan Bamber
While Barnard is currently Warwickshire’s leading run-getter, Ethan Bamber has impressed with ball through four games. The right arm quick has 15 wickets to his name at an average of 28.66, and last time out at Edgbaston, took five wickets in the match to help his side to victory over Essex. His opening spells could be important in the context of this week’s game against Yorkshire, with Bamber having played a key role in Warwickshire’s win against the White Rose this time last year.
Harry Brook (Yorkshire)
England and Yorkshire’s Harry Brook should need no introduction. The powerful right-handed bat is yet to play for the White Rose in the Rothesay County Championship this season, so makes his first start hoping to help his side to a second win in as many weeks. England’s ODI and white ball captain will be one of several key wickets when the two sides meet this week.
Opposition insight
Yorkshire currently sit seventh in the Rothesay County Championship having registered a loss, two draws and a win from their four games. Their sole win to date came last week, with the White Rose seemingly finding form ahead of their clash with the Bears. Taking on high-flying Somerset, Yorkshire eased to a 75-run win, bowling out their opposition for 184 on the final day in their chase of 260. That all came after Yorkshire were bowled out for 162 on day one, and later conceded a first innings lead of 112, but they responded over the final two days to make sure of an impressive come-from-behind victory.
Previous meetings
Last time the two sides met, it was Warwickshire that came out on top, doing so inside three days at Headingley last May. An inspired performance from Bamber, where he took match figures of nine for 107 from 35 overs, helped the Bears to an emphatic five wicket win.
Prior to that, you have to go back to 2022 when the two sides last met in the County Championship. Centuries from Warwickshire’s Sam Hain and Will Rhodes on the final day made sure that the Bears escaped Headingly with a hard-earned draw.
