Warwickshire Second XI fell to a five-wicket defeat in their four-day friendly against Yorkshire Second XI at Headingley.
Despite the Bears fighting back on the final day, the hosts were able to chase down 167 for the loss of five wickets to make sure of victory.
Having lost the toss, Warwickshire were put into bat and immediately found themselves in trouble at 86 for five. A partnership of 121 between Levi Gekis (52) and Oliver Dandy, who top scored with 74 off 97 balls, bolstered the Bears’ total before they were eventually dismissed for 235.
In reply, Yorkshire started well with opener William Luxton the first of two century makers for the White Rose. His 113 came off 121 balls before Noah Kelly was left stranded on 141*, as Yorkshire were bowled all out for 468 with Jacob Garlick (3-77) and Gekis (3-45) the pick of the bowlers for the Bears.
Trailing by 233 after the first innings, Warwickshire responded well, with talented 20-year-old Vansh Jani scoring 87 from 116 balls at the top of the order to set the tone. He was ably assisted in Warwickshire’s second innings by Kai Smith (66), Arjun Nahal (38) and Nathan Gilchrist whose 75 came from 78 balls, with Warwickshire eventually all out for 396.
Gilchrist then returned with ball, taking 2-37 from ten overs, while Taz Ali took 3-43 to give Warwickshire an outside chance of victory, but it was to prove too little too late, with Yorkshire reaching their total five down, thanks to an unbeaten 37 from J Akhtar seeing his side over the line.
The Second XI return to action next week, as they take on Gloucestershire in a T20 fixture at Portland Road on Tuesday 12 May.
