Yorkshire, 110 for 4, trail Warwickshire, 147 all out, by 37 runs.
Yorkshire’s seamers made the most of favourable conditions to gain the upper hand on the opening day of the Rothesay County Championship clash at Edgbaston.
Warwickshire were bowled out for 147 after a disciplined collective seam-bowling display led by Jack White (four for 49), with support from George Hill (two for 27), Ben Cliff and Logan van Beek (both two for 33). Sam Hain’s composed 57 from 97 balls was the standout contribution in difficult batting conditions and prevented the hosts from slipping further trouble.
Yorkshire also found scoring challenging and slipped to 38 for three before James Wharton (40 from 58 balls) and Harry Brook (29 not out from 40) shared a 63-run stand – the highest partnership of the day – to steady the visitors’ innings.
Encouraged by the grass on the surface, Yorkshire opted to bowl first and struck early, removing Warwickshire’s top three inside the opening nine overs. Adam Lyth pouched Alex Davies at second slip off White, wicketkeeper Johnny Bairstow accepted Rob Yates’ nick off Cliff and Harry Brook collected when Mousley edged a big drive at White to first slip.
Beau Webster drove at Hill and played on. Captain Ed Barnard perished to a shot he might like to revisit, a huge drive at a wide ball from van Beek which ended in the gloves of Bairstow.
Hain was the only member of the top six to reach double figures and showed his class in difficult conditions before edging White to first slip. Zen Malik occupied the crease for more than an hour before edging Cliff to third slip.
Yorkshire maintained the pressure as Michael Booth nicked Hill behind and Jordan Thompson, facing his former side, was trapped lbw by van Beek. The final wicket partnership of 30 between Ethan Bamber (28 from 32 balls) and Olly Hannon-Dalby provided late resistance, with Bamber striking two sixes into the Hollies Stand before White produced a swinging yorker to bowl him lbw.
Bamber and Hannon-Dalby then responded with the ball. Hannon-Dalby, recalled from his loan spell at Worcestershire due to injuries to Chris Woakes and Keith Barker, removed Adam Lyth with an excellent off-cutter, while Bamber trapped Finlay Bean lbw. Matt Revis followed in similar fashion to Hannon-Dalby.
That brought Harry Brook to the crease for his first Championship innings in a year. Under heavy cloud cover and in testing conditions, Brook and Wharton counter-attacked impressively, adding 63 in quick time to shift momentum back towards Yorkshire.
Wharton was eventually caught in the cordon by Yates off Thompson, having earlier been dropped by the same fielder, but Brook and Bairstow safely negotiated the closing stages. Brook struck Booth for six over third man and mixed confident strokeplay with some near misses to remain unbeaten at the close.
