Sam Hain is hoping Warwickshire County Cricket Club can secure a stunning victory at Edgbaston Stadium after he helped his side into a commanding position thanks to an unbeaten hundred on day three against Yorkshire.
Following a testing opening day in Birmingham, the Bears responded on days two and three to move into a commanding position, with Hain at the heart of Warwickshire’s fightback.
The hosts were bowled out for 147 in seaming conditions on day one, but responded on day two to bowl out Yorkshire for 152 before piling on the runs.
Hain amassed 164 not out off 319 balls to help his side into a lead of 548 before they declared at tea on day three.
“It was pretty special,” he said. “I had Soph and baby Ron here to see what’s probably one of his first cricket games as well, so to have them in the stands was obviously a bit of a different feeling. I was very pleased and probably a bit emotional as well.
“We had the number of 500 in mind, and we were able to get that with about eight overs to go before tea.”
The Bears’ bowling unit then played their part in the final session, taking five Yorkshire wickets to close in on a second win of the Rothesay County Championship season.
“To get five in the final session was very cool,” Hain added.
“You know that if you get a couple, you’re never too far away. I thought all the bowlers were exceptional. We talk about bowling as a unit and I thought we had that for the last session.
“Barney (Ed Barnard) said in there, that’s half the job. It’s not done yet. We’ve got to rest up and come again.
“I still think the wicket is doing enough, so hopefully we can come back tomorrow and we can all witness what should be an exciting day.”
The final day of Warwickshire’s four-day Rothesay County Championship game gets under way at Edgbaston on Monday 11 May at 11:00am.
