Warwickshire Second XI tied a high-scoring T20 thriller against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham College on Wednesday 27 May.

The match saw a total of 472 runs in 40 overs on a day where bat dominated ball.

The Bears lost the toss and were put into bat, making swift progress towards a daunting total of 236 for seven from their 20 overs.

A blistering 130-run opening stand between Zen Malik and Kai Smith for the Bears came in just 8.5 overs, with Malik running riot for his 80 off 33 balls, while Smith dazzled with 46 off 22 before being dismissed.

Quick contributions came further down the order too, from Theo Wylie (30 off 22), Michael Booth (23 off 11) and Ethan Bamber (23 off 10), as the Bears amassed 236.

The Bears struck with the first ball of Gloucestershire’s reply, as Booth got one through the defences of Joe Phillips, before Tommy Boorman and Joseph Eckland combined for the hosts.

The duo put on 124 for the second wicket in nine overs, with Boorman (73 off 40) and Eckland (76 off 36) bringing Gloucestershire back into the game.

Gloucestershire looked to be easing towards their total, requiring 26 to win from the last three overs, before two wickets from Bamber in an over that went for just two, and six off the penultimate over, left the hosts needing 18 from the final six balls.

A late cameo from Aman Rao for Gloucestershire, who struck 14 off 5 balls, including 12 off the last three, saw the game end in an enthralling tie.

The Second XI currently sit second in the T20 Central Group, two points behind leaders Northamptonshire with a game in hand.
