Amu Surenkumar says Warwickshire Bears Women will learn from their Metro Bank One Day Cup fixture with Somerset, as they fell to a seven-wicket defeat.

The Bears were unable to capitalise on a fine start to the game, after they reached 151 for two in the 26th over, with Surenkumar leading the way with a well-crafted 58 from 72 balls.

On a turning pitch at The Maer Ground in Exmouth, Somerset’s spinners then changed the game in their favour, in a devastating eight over spell that saw the Bears bowled out for 160.

“It was disappointing to lose in the way we did after making such a good start,” Surenkumar said. “Georgia Redmayne was so good at putting away the bad ball and it was a near-perfect powerplay for us.

“Meg (Austin) and Katie (George) also played nicely and we looked well-set at 151-2, but it was a spinners wicket and Somerset’s low bowlers played really well.

“It can be tough for new batters to have to face spin on a pitch like that and we did fall away at the end.”

In reply, Somerset eased to the total three down, with Anika Learoyd seeing her side home with an unbeaten 70.

Despite a first defeat in four games, Warwickshire remain in fourth place in the Metro Bank One Day Cup standings, with Surenkumar looking for the Bears to move on quickly ahead of next week’s fixture against in-form Hampshire.

“It’s never easy defending a total like that, especially when experienced players like Sophie Luff and Anika Learoyd are going well,” she added.

“We gave it our best shot, but we just didn’t have enough runs on the board. We’ll learn from this and move on to the next one.”

Bears Women’s next Metro Bank One Day Cup fixture takes place on Wednesday 24 June, as travel to Southampton to take on Hampshire at the Utilita Bowl.
