England are undefeated at Edgbaston since 2008 in Test Cricket
During the 2018 season, Edgbaston will host England matches against two great forces of world cricket: Australia and India.
And England’s players under Joe Root and Eoin Morgan can’t wait to be back in Birmingham and an Edgbaston Stadium which has become emphatically the national team’s favourite ground.
England’s players love Edgbaston’s uniquely passionate, humorous atmosphere – and are galvanised by it. After West Indies were beaten in the inaugural Day/Night Test in England in Birmingham last August, Root reflected on the support from the stands as “like having 12 men on the field.”
England’s Record in Birmingham
Remarkably, England have won 27 of 50 Tests in the Second City stretching back to 1902 – and their recent record is as strong as ever. In the last decade, England have lost just one Test in Birmingham while beating India, Australia, Pakistan and West Indies.
It’s probably the best atmosphere in the country

Something about the Edgbaston atmosphere and the wall of noise from the Hollies Stand – raucous and patriotic but always colourful and good-natured – always lifts England’s players. “It’s probably the best atmosphere in the country,” commented Andrew Flintoff after he clobbered a 79-ball 74 against the Aussies in 2009.
“The atmosphere is unique – the closest you get as a cricketer to knowing what it’s like to be a professional footballer,” was Graeme Swann’s assessment after his 37-20-65-6 torpedoed Pakistan in 2010.
In 2011, an India team strewn with greats including Sachin Tendulkar was swept away by an innings and 242 runs – England’s fifth-biggest ever Test victory. In 2015, the fearsome pace and skill of James Anderson underpinned an eight-wicket win over Australia to set up England’s triumph in the Ashes series.
A year later, Warwickshire’s own Chris Woakes was at the heart of England’s sensational fightback win over Pakistan. Then came 2017, that first day/nighter, and a West Indies side which a week later would convincingly beat England at Headingley was demolished by an innings and 209 runs as Alastair Cook piled up his second Test double-ton in Birmingham.
It’s no wonder that England’s cricketers love playing at Edgbaston – and spectators travel from far and wide to watch.
Two more great Edgbaston occasions are assured in 2018: England v Australia in a T20 International on Wednesday June 27 and England v India in a Test starting on Wednesday August 1.
