He’s a legend of the sport and a giant of West Indies cricket.
Former fast bowler, who terrorised many a English batsmen down the years, Curtly Ambrose is already looking forward to next year’s Test at Edgbaston – and he believes, with the right people involved, we could see a resurgence in West Indies cricket.
Jason Holder’s young and exciting West Indies team will arrive in Birmingham from Friday 12 June for the second Test match of the series against Joe Root’s star studded England side.
Ambrose has found memories of his own Test appearances at Edgbaston, winning all three Tests against England – and all convincingly.
“Edgbaston has always been a happy hunting ground for me,” Ambrose recalled. “We enjoyed tremendous success here. There’s always a good atmosphere and I enjoyed playing here.
“However, when I look at it now it is so much nicer than it was back then. It’s improved quite a lot. The West Indies support is also always good at Edgbaston.
“I remember how good the atmosphere was, and still is. From both set of supporters. I know the English supporters want to see England win, but they do appreciate good cricket and that makes a difference.”
Attention now turns to next summer’s eagerly-anticipated Test match at Edgbaston. While the West Indies Test side hasn’t enjoyed much success of late, Ambrose insists its only a matter of time before results turn around.
“A lot of people compare the current West Indies team to teams before, which I think is a bit unfair because we are never going to be able to find those kind of players again. One or two might come through, but to find a team like those in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s is almost impossible and it’s not a fair comparison.
“There is still a lot of talent in the side now and I believe, given the right people are involved, we will see a resurgence in West Indies cricket. But I don’t think you will ever see that golden era again.”
