Day 1

Worcestershire won the toss and made a strong start with their captain, Rhodes, making a half century and featuring in an opening partnership of 131 with fellow opener Westbury 44 who was first out when returning a catch to Singh in the thirty seventh over.

Three wickets in 14 overs for the addition of 44 runs put Warwickshire back on even terms, before Dell’s 60, well supported by Whitley 32 and Malik 25 took the home side past three hundred just before stumps when Worcestershire closed on 310-7 having lost Dell to the final delivery of the day when bowled by Lamb.

Thornton was Warwickshire’s most successful bowler on the opening day with 2-64.

Day 2

Thornton picked up his third wicket of the innings on the second morning, as Worcestershire declared on 347-8 from 111 overs leaving the Warwickshire openers 24 overs batting before lunch in which time Umeed 45 and Westwood added 73 for the first wicket, until Umeed was dismissed by Rhodes just before the interval. At lunch Warwickshire were 74-1.

After lunch, Westwood, returning from an injured foot, completed his half-century but was then out for 52 to Rhodes, while Lamb had to retire hurt when on 13.

Javid and Hain added 80 with Javid making 68 until trapped lbw by Malik who then had Hain 45 caught by Kervezee as Warwickshire soon after declared on 253-4 still 94 in arrears on first innings.

At stumps, Worcestershire were 16-0 from six overs.

Day 3

Spencer took two early wickets for Warwickshire on the third day, but a selection of part-time bowlers then fed the third wicket partnership of Rhodes and Hepburn to set up a declaration target for an afternoon chase.

Hepburn and Rhodes completed their half centuries as Hain, Banks and wicket-keeper Sookias were battered for 122 runs from just 15 overs.

Rhodes 76* and Hepburn 74* added 138 for the unbeaten third wicket in 19 overs before the declaration on 196-2 setting Warwickshire a target of 291 for victory in the two sessions remaining on the final day.

After lunch Umeed 72 and Banks 66 set about the task with relish, putting on 139 for the first wicket in less than 39 overs before both batsmen were dismissed within 12 runs of each other by Rhodes.

Needing quick runs to reach their target, Warwickshire lost Javid 16, again to Rhodes, but Hain 35 from 38 balls, Thomason 37 from 29, Panayi 24 from 23 and Adair 27* from 25 deliveries saw them home with three wickets in hand.

A terrific chase to secure the first victory of the season with a solid batting performance from all the Warwickshire batsmen.
