Having completed an exciting Second Eleven Championship match last week, the two sides were quickly back opposing one another, this time in the Second Eleven Trophy at Moseley where Worcestershire chose to bat on a bright but bitterly cold morning.
Thomason, taking the new ball for Warwickshire struck early blows, bowling Worcestershire’s skipper, Rhodes for just five and then removing the experienced pair of Fell 11 and D’Oliviera 2, with two wickets in four balls, leaving the visitors on 34-3 in just the seventh over.
These early successes prompted the fourth wicket pair of opener, Westbury now well supported by Whitley, to then add 121 runs for the fourth wicket in the next twenty one overs until Singh trapped Westbury lbw for 82 from 90 balls, an innings that included eleven fours and a six.
Whitley, having just completed his half century before Westbury’s dismissal, was next to go, bowled by Thomason for ninety of just eighty three balls with eleven fours and three sixes, as Thomason finished his ten overs with 4-57
231-5 in just the thirty ninth over, Worcestershire looked to be heading for a huge total, particularly with Kervezee looking to be in aggressive form, as he and Hepburn raced to a sixth wicket half century partnership in less than seven overs ,with Kervezee reaching his own fifty.
Thornton had Hepburn 21 caught behind by Mellor off the last ball of the forty seventh over as Worcestershire continued to look for late runs and Poysden brought Kervezee’s powerful hitting to an end when he holed out to Thornton for 76 from 61 deliveries with three sixes, having taken Worcestershire past three hundred.
Shanty was bowled by Thornton 7 in the penultimate over of the innings before Worcestershire closed their fifty overs on 307 from 49.4 overs after Panayi took the final two wickets in three balls of the last over, setting Warwickshire a target of 308 for victory.
Warwickshire’s reply got off to strong start, with Umeed outscoring fellow opener Hain, reaching his half century off 58 deliveries and taking his side on to 107-0 after twenty two overs and progressing to an opening partnership of 147 until Hain was dismissed for 62 by D’Oliviera in the 29th over.
Three balls later rain drove the players from the field and once play resumed, Warwickshire saw the overs remaining drop to just 7.3 and a revised target of 221 leaving them needing to score seventy three more runs to win.
With nine wickets in hand, Warwickshire then went into an extraordinary batting collapse that saw them lose Umeed 87, lbw to Rhodes with seven runs added, followed by the middle-order of Banks 12, Mellor 3 and Thomason 1 for the addition of a further twenty runs from fifteen balls.
Panayi and Thornton were run out as the required rate crept higher and when Singh 6 became the eighth wicket to fall Warwickshire still needed thirty one from twelve deliveries.
Adair 14* and Poysden 3* found the task too steep and Warwickshire fell short by thirteen runs, a disappointing end to a match that had looked to be within their grasp before the weather intervened.
The second eleven are in Trophy action again on Friday when they entertain Nottinghamshire again at Moseley C.C.
