Double century from Rob Yates powered Warwickshire 2nd XI to a nine-wicket win over Somerset
A double century from 18-year-old Rob Yates and 13 wickets in the match for Alex Thomson powered Warwickshire 2nd XI to a nine-wicket win over Somerset in a four-day friendly at Taunton Vale.
Yates underlined his progress as yet another product of the Bears’ player pathway with a monumental unbeaten 212 as he carried his bat through the first innings of 514.
The former Warwick School pupil, who plays for Moseley, batted for eight hours 16 minutes, faced 370 balls and hit 31 fours. It was his second century for the 2nd XI to follow his maiden ton against Nottinghamshire last year.
Yates was well-supported by Ed Pollock (79, 105 balls), Matt Lamb (53, 63) and George Panayi (50, 131) – and then it was the turn of off-spinner Thomson to shine.
Thomson’s fine all-round form in the 2nds this season has had him knocking hard on the 1st XI door and he got amongst the Somerset batsmen with five for 43 and eight for 135 as they were bowled out for 208 and 339.
That left Warwickshire a victory target of just 34 which they reached for the lost of just wicket, Yates seeing them home with an unbeaten 17 to end with 229 runs unbeaten in the match.
