Report: Manchester Originals v Birmingham Phoenix Women

Some wonderful fielding and three wickets for Kirstie Gordon ensured Birmingham Phoenix got a first win in The Hundred as they beat Manchester originals by 20 runs at Emirates Old Trafford.

The Phoenix made 113 for nine off their 100 balls with only skipper Amy Jones’ 31 top scoring against some tight spin bowling of England’s Sophie Ecclestone and rising star Emma Lamb who finished with three for 16 from her 20 balls.

An enterprising start from the visitors had seen Erin Burns twice scoop hit Kate Cross to the boundary before she became Ecclestone’s first victim when chipping one to Kaur at mid off for 17.

Shafali Verma, Emily Arlott and Katie Mack then fell in quick succession for single figure scores to leave Phoenix 35 for four off 37 balls and in deep trouble.

Respectability was restored by Jones who bludgeoned 15 off four balls from Laura Jackson, including a six and two fours, before Eve Jones was bowled sweeping for seven by Lamb.

Lamb picked up her third wicket trapping Georgia Elwiss in front for one but 20 from Gwenan Davies and Issy Wong with 10 helped add some valuable tail end runs.

Originals’ reply was in immediate trouble when Gordon accounted for both opening batters within the first 12 balls as Lambs was dismissed lbw for four and Lizelle Lee was well caught by sub fielder Phoebe Franklin for seven.

An even better catch did for Georgie Boyce as Gordon took a skier running back from cover which left the hosts 24 for three from 28 balls.

Mignon du Preez and Kaur tried to spark a recovery but when the South African was stumped dancing down to Abtaha Maqsood for four the win predictor looked to be heading only one way.

But with the wristy elegance of Kaur at the crease Originals always had a chance and together with Ellie Threlked the pair dragged their side back into contention.

Scampering for every single and two on the huge Emirates Old Trafford outfield, set at the maximum 70 yards square, the duo put on 42 for the fifth wicket before Threlkeld was bowled by Maqsood for 17.

The equation was tight and when Ecclestone became Gordon’s third wicket it became too much with Phoenix closing out the game with some ease.
