Bethell’s breakthrough year

What a difference a year makes: just ask Jacob Bethell!

At the start of 2024 Bethell said he felt “quite far away” from the England set-up.

But a blistering Vitality Blast campaign with the Bears resulted in a call-up to England’s white ball series against Australia in September last year.

A white ball tour to the West Indies followed before Test selectors raised eyebrows by including Bethell for the Test tour of New Zealand.

“Edgbaston is my home. I really want to play my part in bringing success to the county and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

Jacob made 11 red ball appearances for Warwickshire in 2024, scoring 466 runs at an average of 31.06.

But it was his displays in the Blast that grabbed the attention, the highlight of which was a stunning 15-ball 50 against Northants Steelbacks.

He finished Bears’ T20 summer with an average of 36.10 – hitting 361 in 12 innings at a Strike Rate of 153.61 – while no-one hit more sixes (23) than Bethell.

Jacob was born in Barbados and came to Warwickshire aged 12 as part of the Club’s relationship with Rugby School and its Director of Cricket, former Bears’ captain Michael Powell.
