Michael Burgess has agreed a loan switch to his former club Sussex for the Vitality Blast campaign.

The wicket-keeper batter, who played for the Hove club from 2017-2019, joins up with former Warwickshire Director of Cricket Paul Farbrace for the entirety of the Blast campaign.

However, the 28-year-old will return to play for Warwickshire in two LV= Insurance County Championship matches – at Notts (11-14 June) and Essex (25-28 June) – which punctuate the T20 calendar.

Burgess said: “I’m excited to be heading back to Hove, a place I have very fond memories of from my time down there.

“There has been quite a lot of change in the playing squad since I left but there are still some familiar faces like Tom Haines, Tymal Mills and Ollie Robinson. I’m looking forward to meeting up with the group and getting started on Friday.

“This is a good move for me, it means I can keep playing first team cricket during the T20 season, stay sharp and I’ll come back to hopefully keep up our strong start to the red ball campaign.”

Burgess – who’s scored 491 runs in 42 T20 innings, with 21 catches and 12 stumpings – was part of the Sussex team that made it to T20 Finals Day in 2018.

Bears First Team Coach Mark Robinson said: “It’s a great opportunity for Burgy to play competitive cricket during the Blast season. Sussex are getting a really good player, and Burgy has the chance to play T20 again at a high level.”
