The Edgbaston Classroom is in full swing this year and we have had the great joy of welcoming in students from many different schools including Braidwood School, a local specialist school catering for children with hearing difficulties. WCCC coach Martyn joined nine Braidwood students for a day they will not soon forget. The Edgbaston Classroom has been developed to give children an exciting and informative experience, giving them the opportunity to see behind-the-scenes at the stadium, accessing areas that very few see including the players changing rooms, the press suite and the media centre, where the world’s journalists report on the action below.
Following the tour, our guests were taken to the Edgbaston Cricket Centre where they worked through our unique educational workbook. Developed in conjunction with teachers, the Edgbaston Classroom Workbook takes pupils through a range of activities that link closely with school curriculum subjects including maths, geography and English, using cricket as the tool for engagement. For Braidwood School, whose visit came during their numeracy week, the activities within the workbook focusing on maths were particularly relevant and gave them a new way of looking at the maths involved in cricket.
"Our students enjoyed the cricket coaching activities, the tour of the stadium and learning interesting facts about the ground from Martyn"
After a quick break for some lunch – it was time for the students from Braidwood to test their cricketing skills in the Edgbaston Cricket Centre. Martyn led the students in a number of drills, giving them the opportunity to experience different aspects of the game including catching, throwing and hitting. For some of the students, this was their first time picking up a cricket bat and they absolutely loved it.
The Edgbaston Classroom is available for all Primary Schools – if you are interested in bringing your school to one of our sessions, please get in touch with Will Roberts, Community Development Executive at email@example.com
