Edgbaston’s night sky will come alive with a light spectacular featuring more than 600 drones as the stadium switches to a more sustainable autumn show.

The ‘Evolution’ drone show – a first of its kind display to be shown in Birmingham – is set to land at Edgbaston stadium on Saturday 26 October.

The immersive event features 620 drones, each equipped with changeable, colourful LED lights, which take audiences on “a mesmerising journey through time and space”.

Early bird tickets at £20 per adult and £15 for children and concessions are available until 19th July at yuup.co/evolution

It’s a narrated story starting with the Big Bang, the explosive birth of the universe, and plots the course of time through to modern day.

Evolution sold out shows in Bristol, Cardiff, and the East Midlands last year; the Edgbaston event is one of a five-strong tour of cricket grounds in 2024.

Edgbaston Events Manager Ella Hogan said the drone spectacular replaces the stadium’s fireworks show which had been hosted at the ground for almost 10 years.

She added: “We know our fireworks event has been hugely popular over the years but we felt it was time for change and to look at an alternative, more sustainable option – but one that still has the wow factor.

“The drones perform a dazzling animation in the night sky with each one’s flight path pre-programmed and mapped out. I saw one of the events last year and it really is something quite special to be a part of.

“The show is obviously more sustainable than a large fireworks display and there will be no noise pollution, no loud bangs, or firework debris issues that we know concerned some of our near neighbours.

“I’m excited to bring the Evolution show to Edgbaston and sure it will be an amazing occasion for families and people of all ages to enjoy.”

The event has been designed by Celestial – creators of drone light shows for brands across the globe – and local experiences company Yuup.

Celestial Co-founder John Hopkins, said: “Evolution has been four years in the making. This is so much more than a drone light show, it’s an experience of stadium scale to tell the story of time.

“The 2024 season incorporates performances at five county cricket grounds. We’ve found the open bowl design of cricket grounds, with the drone display against a night sky, is the perfect setting and really makes it come to life.”

And Yuup founder Dominic Mills, added: “We’re hugely excited to be partnering with Celestial to bring this unique spectacle to Birmingham and on such an epic scale. Our shows have now been viewed by 60,000 people and the show is now bigger and better with more drones and a longer show time than our early productions.”

The Edgbaston show takes place on Saturday 26 October at Edgbaston Stadium. Gates open at 5.30pm, with food and drink outlets serving a variety of refreshments while a live DJ plays ahead of the show starting at 7.30pm.

Full-price tickets after 19 July are £26 per adult and £21 for children and concessions.
