An estimated global TV audience of over one billion people watched arguably one of the biggest matches in world sport as cricketing giants India and Pakistan met at Edgbaston in the ICC Champions Trophy.

The eyes of the cricket world were on Birmingham as the latest instalment of one of sport’s great rivalries unfolded in front of a 24,156 full-house, a record crowd for an ODI at Edgbaston Stadium. It was one of world cricket’s most hotly-anticipated matches this year which proved to be simply an unmissable occasion for some of the biggest global TV celebrities who enjoyed Edgbaston’s fantastic service and unrivalled hospitality.

Famous celebrities were on show and provided the glitz and the glamour to the day which saw Virat Kholi and Yuvray Singh produce outstanding performances to guide India to a comfortable 124-run (D/L) victory over rivals Pakistan.

It was one of world cricket’s most hotly-anticipated matches this year which proved to be simply an unmissable occasion for some of the biggest global TV celebrities.

Who were the celebs at Edgbaston?

Amir Khan a British professional boxer and a former unified light-welterweight world champion, having held the WBA title from 2009 to 2012, and the IBF title in 2011, watched the spectacle unfold from the Banqueting Suite. In the 1882 Suite we had Ranveer Singh, who for those who don’t know, is a massive Bollywood Actor who made his acting debut in 2010.

Ranveer seemed to enjoy his hospitality experience as he cheered on every run scored by the India team from our 1882 balcony and tweeted to his 4.97 million following “what a match the boys played! Scintillating all round performance! Banging start to the tournament.” Ranveer was joined by Nita Ambani, the owner of Mumbai Indians and is also the chairperson and founder of Reliance Foundation and a non-executive director of Reliance Industries with a family fortune estimated in excess of US$20 billion. Nita is married to Reliance Industries chairman and managing directorMukesh Ambani who was also at the match.

Adil Ray, OBE is a British actor, comedian and radio and television presenter, who watched the match from our Chairman’s Lounge. Adil stars in the BBC One comedy Citizen Khan, which he created and co-writes, as well as presenting on various BBC radio stations.

Cricketing Legends out in force

The crowd went into a frenzy and erupted by chanting Sachin’s name as the little master, arguably one of the greatest ever players, was spotted on the balcony in Edgbaston’s luxurious Executive Boxes. Sachin Tendulkar is still the leading run scorer in Tests, with 15,921 runs, as well as in One-Day Internationals, with 18,426 runs. He is the only player to score more than 30,000 runs in all forms of international cricket (Tests, ODIs and Twenty20 Internationals).

And there were other Indian cricket legends in presence! The fans were delighted to see another cricket legend Harbhajan Singh, India’s most successful off-spin bowler, who all left positive comments on Edgbaston’s quality of food, the facilities and our customer service.

We were delighted to welcome Sunil Gavaskar to our premium Warwickshire Suite as one of the guest speakers on the day. Our hospitality clients were fortunate to hear from Sunil himself who played during the 1970s and 1980s for the Bombay cricket team and Indian national team. He was widely regarded as one of the greatest opening batsmen in cricket history. Edgbaston also welcomed Ricky Ponting, Shane Warne, Ramiz Raja, Mohammad Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly who went away extremely delighted with their overall experience.
