{"id":8669,"date":"2023-04-13T09:50:31","date_gmt":"2023-04-13T09:50:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edgbaston.com\/events\/?p=8669"},"modified":"2023-04-13T09:50:32","modified_gmt":"2023-04-13T09:50:32","slug":"edgbaston-finance-boss-lends-hand-to-pakistan-flood-relief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/edgbaston.com\/events\/news\/edgbaston-finance-boss-lends-hand-to-pakistan-flood-relief\/","title":{"rendered":"Edgbaston finance boss lends hand to Pakistan flood relief"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Abraham Khan \u2013 Edgbaston\u2019s Head of Finance \u2013 visited some of the villages worst hit by last year\u2019s catastrophic flooding which cost 1,700 lives and left more than two million people homeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He raised thousands of pounds for the relief effort through a combination of an online appeal and his own savings which he used to help buy food, clothing and life-saving equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 39-year-old, who\u2019s worked at Edgbaston for nine years, helped establish water purification systems so communities could access clean water and spent time working in schools for homeless children.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe welcome we received was truly humbling,\u201d said Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThrough the tragedy we still came across many smiling faces. People seemed to take comfort simply knowing we cared, that we\u2019d travelled over to do whatever we could to help.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.edgbaston.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Abraham-flood-relief.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-96954\" width=\"1234\" height=\"693\" srcset=\"https:\/\/edgbaston.com\/events\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Abraham-flood-relief.jpg 1011w, https:\/\/edgbaston.com\/events\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Abraham-flood-relief-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/edgbaston.com\/events\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Abraham-flood-relief-676x380.jpg 676w, https:\/\/edgbaston.com\/events\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Abraham-flood-relief-768x431.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1234px) 100vw, 1234px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t just look on from home and see the news unfolding. So I started to save money and raise funds. Then in February I flew out with a friend. We went out there independently, not as part of a humanitarian mission or charity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe flew to Karachi and then on to the wider area called Sindh which was one of the worst affected by the floods. There were places that had been completely under water for three months; the residue of water on the few remaining buildings was at around nine feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe spoke to local people and officials to find how we could best help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the most important things we did was setting up a water purification system as drinking contaminated water was causing lots of ill health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.edgbaston.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Water-purification.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-96955\" srcset=\"https:\/\/edgbaston.com\/events\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Water-purification.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/edgbaston.com\/events\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Water-purification-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/edgbaston.com\/events\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Water-purification-676x380.jpg 676w, https:\/\/edgbaston.com\/events\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Water-purification-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI bought livestock for families so they could make a start getting back on their feet, plus clothing and food parcels as many people were still living in emergency accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne man in his 80\u2019s was living in a donated tent near where his home had been. There were only a few bricks left. We just did whatever we could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWe also visited a makeshift school for children who\u2019d been made homeless by the floods and who\u2019d lost family. We bought bags, uniforms, school equipment and clothing. Without the school these children would be on the street.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI helped teach some English lessons and played cricket with the children. Providing emotional support, showing we cared, felt as important as buying supplies.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abraham also spent a week in Turkey on route to Pakistan to help with the earthquake relief effort. He worked at a stadium acting as a base to collect, package and distribute emergency supplies \u2013 and also worked with big manufacturers to organise the supply of clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1235\" height=\"696\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.edgbaston.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/In-Turkey.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-96958\" srcset=\"https:\/\/edgbaston.com\/events\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/In-Turkey.jpg 1235w, https:\/\/edgbaston.com\/events\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/In-Turkey-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/edgbaston.com\/events\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/In-Turkey-674x380.jpg 674w, https:\/\/edgbaston.com\/events\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/In-Turkey-768x433.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1235px) 100vw, 1235px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s now returned to Birmingham to be reunited with his family in Moseley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout the support of my family, friends and work colleagues who picked up the slack for me, I wouldn\u2019t have been able to go to Turkey and then Pakistan,\u201d added Abraham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not easy for any employer to release a staff member for six weeks but I\u2019m grateful that Edgbaston saw the big picture and how I desperately wanted to do my bit to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI do feel I\u2019ve helped. I know I\u2019ve given people a better opportunity for their futures than they would if I hadn\u2019t gone, donating to children\u2019s education, buying farm animals for communities, and helping with infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope I\u2019ve helped set the foundation to have better lives. When can you ever say that?
