Fixture changes for 2022

Please read the below regarding changes to our 2022 England fixtures.

Following discussions with the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Edgbaston has agreed to step in and host the rescheduled fifth LV= Insurance men’s Test match between England and India, from Friday 1 to Tuesday 5 July.

As a result, the need to accommodate the India Test has had a knock-on effect to Edgbaston’s schedule ODI between England and India at Edgbaston on Saturday 9 July will now be played as an IT20.

The Test match between England and South Africa in 2022 will now be held at Emirates Old Trafford.

Why has the international schedule at Edgbaston changed for 2022?

Following discussions with the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Edgbaston has agreed to step in and host the postponed fifth LV= Insurance men’s Test match due to the unavailability of its original venue, from Friday 1 to Tuesday 5 July.

As a result, the need to accommodate the India Test Match has had a knock-on effect to Edgbaston’s schedule:

  • The scheduled ODI between England and India at Edgbaston on Saturday 9 July will now be played as an IT20, start time to be confirmed.
  • The Test match between England and South Africa in 2022 will now be held at Emirates Old Trafford.

Chief Executive, Stuart Cain said: “Following extensive discussions with the ECB, Emirates Old Trafford and BCCI, it was clear that the only way this Test could be played in the window available was if it moved to Edgbaston, so this is the right thing to do for the game.

“It means that the finale of what’s already been a pulsating Test series will be held in Birmingham which is a great opportunity for the city to host another global sporting event.

“This decision wasn’t taken lightly, and we know that there will be some cricket fans disappointed by the fact that South Africa will no longer be coming to the city, but we will welcome them with open arms in future years.”

Will the India Test be the fifth of the series or a standalone game?

The England v India Test match at Edgbaston in 2022 will be the fifth game of the LV= Insurance Test series, with India leading the five-match series 2-1 with one to play.

The fixture will also count towards the on-going World Test Championship.

If I am already a ticket buyer for either the original Test match or ODI, what happens next?

Ticket buyers for the England v South Africa Test match or England v India ODI will have the option to keep their ticket for the same day of the new Test match or IT20 fixture, or they can request a full refund for all tickets in their booking.

What procedures have been put in place to keep Edgbaston safe?

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, we have been working hard to make sure Edgbaston can welcome staff, players and fans back safely.

We know things can change and we’ve made our approach flexible so we can react to any changes to the guidelines. Hopefully, we won’t need to.

As part of this, we have introduced a number of new and improved health, safety and cleanliness procedures to provide greater reassurance to all visitors.

  • Cleanliness – New and improved cleaning procedures are in place (making sure the stadium remains clean) and we will have plenty of hand sanitiser dispensers available around the stadium.
  • Catering – Food and drink will be prepared on-site and will be as good as ever, with a wide range of choices and fresh produce available.
  • Technology – We will be utilising the latest technology and the new Edgbaston app (download it today!) to offer a contactless entry into the stadium, option to view wait times at all Edgbaston bars and click and collect ordering for food and drink. We are also a cashless stadium.
  • Staff – All staff are fully trained and working to new operational procedures and will have suitable PPE tailored to their role.
  • Communication – Ticket buyers will have regular communications from the Club pre-arrival, on-the-day and post event with all the information they need for their day with us.
