One Day Cup Report: Warwickshire v Leicestershire

Warwickshire maintained their challenge for Royal London Cup qualification by cruising to a nine-wicket win over Leicestershire at Edgbaston.

Jonathan Trott (102 not out, 121 balls, nine fours) and Sam Hain (69 not out, 87 balls, five fours) eased the Bears to victory and handed the visitors a sixth successive defeat.

The Foxes were punished for wasting first use of an excellent batting track. After winning the toss, Leicestershire reached a relatively promising 135 for three in the 24th over but collapsed to 207 all out.

While Mark Cosgrove (60, 58 balls, ten fours) and Colin Ackermann (57, 68, seven fours, one six) were together, a strong total looked achievable but after Olly Stone dismissed Cosgrove the last seven wickets fell for 72 runs in 19 overs.

Stone took three for 44 and Aaron Thomason three for 45 before limping off with a side strain during his final over.

Warwickshire  made light work of their small target. Ed Pollock smashed 33 from 18 balls before Trott and Sam Hain added an unbroken 159 in 31 overs.

On a good pitch, Leicestershire hit early trouble at seven for two after captain Paul Horton steered Keith Barker to second slip and Neil Dexter sent a return catch to Stone. Cameron Delport hit four successive fours off Stone but then skied a pull at Barker to leave the Foxes 31 for three.

Cosgrove and Ackermann got the innings going with a stand of 104 in 17 overs, Cosgrove passing 50 for the fourth successive match before miscuing Stone to mid-off. Thereafter the innings tailed off dramatically.

Ackerman lifted Thomason for six over long on then tried to repeat the blow next ball and found only the hands of mid on. Thomason dismissed Lewis Hill lbw, Tom Wells was trapped in front by Jeetan Patel and Zak Chappell spliced a pull at Thomason to short mid-wicket.

After Stone rattled Dieter Klein’s stumps with a yorker, last pair Callum Parkinson and Gavin Griffiths had 66 balls at their disposal. They used 24 of them before Parkinson’s off-stump was knocked out by Henry Brookes.

When Warwickshire replied, Pollock and Trott put 50 on the board in 38 balls, the half-century brought up by six off Chappell for Pollock over fine leg. Chappell soon got his revenge with a yorker into Pollock’s stumps but Trott and Hain were utterly untroubled.

Trott’s second century in successive List A games was greeted by a standing ovation from the big crowd and he went on to escort his side all the way to a win which sets up a mouth-watering group finale against old rivals Worcestershire at Edgbaston on Thursday.

Bears Take On Leicestershire Foxes Tomorrow

After four away trips in five group games, the Bears now finish their North Group programme with two local derby home games, against the Foxes tomorrow then a day/nighter against Worcestershire on Thursday (2pm).

They will go into them on the back of a thrilling five-wicket victory at the Riverside last night. Set a tall target of 299, Jeetan Patel’s side chased it down perfectly thanks to high-class centuries from Ian Bell (145 not out, 144 balls) and Jonathan Trott (100, 114 balls).

Warwickshire have played some excellent 50-over cricket on opposing turf in the last fortnight, beating Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Durham in their own back-yards. Now first-team coach Jim Troughton wants to see more of that form unfurled back at base in Birmingham, starting against Leicestershire tomorrow.

Sunday afternoon games at Edgbaston, with a big crowd in, are always special I know how much the guys are looking forward to it.

Jim Troughton

“The group phase is a testing one with a few road trips in quite a short space of time. They included a late night at Durham yesterday but the guys responded there with a fantastic performance with Belly and Trotty really showing their class.

“Now we finish with two home games which is great. The players will rest up as much as they can on Saturday and be ready to go again against Leicestershire, and then again against our old rivals Worcestershire, which is always a great atmosphere, on Thursday.”

The win at Durham, the Bears’ first there in List A cricket since 2005, left them third in the North Group, level on points with leaders Derbyshire. Another victory tomorrow would leave them strongly-placed to qualify but Bell, speaking after last night’s match, knows that there is still plenty of work to do.

It was a really important game at Durham and we’re very happy with the result as it keeps us in the hunt,” he said. “It wasn’t a straightforward chase as any time you chase 300 you’ve got to get it right.

Ian Bell

“It was nice for both Trotty and I. He’s a very good friend of mine and we’ve been fortunate to play a lot of cricket together so to share a 200-run partnership with him in his last season is very special and something we’ll look back on.

“Now we go back home and hopefully we can put on some good cricket in front of our supporters, which could put us in the top three in the end.”

Gates open at 10am, with the match starting at 11am. Come down to Edgbaston to support the Bears!
