Championship Report: Warwickshire v Yorkshire 2019

Day Three

No play.

Day Two

No play.

Day One

Tom Kohler-Cadmore celebrated his 100th first-class innings with his ninth first-class century as Yorkshire plundered a depleted Warwickshire attack on a truncated opening day of their Specsavers County Championship match at Edgbaston.

In two sessions before rain wiped out play after tea, Kohler-Cadmore struck an unbeaten 165 (175 balls, 26 fours, one six) out of his side’s excellent foundation of 261 for two.

He added 184 for the second wicket with debutant Tom Loten, a 20-year-old from York, who showed an excellent temperament in making 58 (155 balls, eight fours) for a maiden half-century in his first first-class innings.

Together the pair ensured that Yorkshire emphatically bounced back from their record defeat, by 433 runs to Kent at Headingley last week.

On a good batting pitch, offering nothing to the seamers and only the slowest of turn to the spinners, it was a good toss for the White Rose to win and Kohler-Cadmore was soon taking advantage, clubbing the ball through the off-side as he charged to 50 from 49 balls.

He and Adam Lyth added 77 in 17.4 overs for the first wicket before Lyth (26, 55 balls) edged Craig Miles, recalled to the team in place of the injured George Garrett, to second slip where Sam Hain took a sharp catch.

Loten survived some uncertain early moments and a couple of loud appeals against spinner Jeetan Patel but settled impressively to play with patience and composure. He reached his half-century from 142 balls (seven fours), content to take the minor role while the more assertive Kohler-Cadmore moved to a 113-ball century with 13 fours and a six.

Loten finally fell to the last ball before tea when he edged off-spinner Alex Thomson low to Will Rhodes at slip. Yorkshire were denied an opportunity to build further in the final session when rain set in during the tea interval.

Championship Preview: Warwickshire v Yorkshire 2019

Having ended their away programme with a spectacular eight-wicket win over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge last week, the Bears would love to carry that momentum into the final home match.

The victory at Trent Bridge, achieved after conceding 498 in the first innings by an injury-ravaged squad which even sustained three more injuries during the game, without doubt ranks amongst the best and biggest-hearted in the club’s history.

The players really showed what they are about at Nottingham. To win the game after conceding 498 was real testament to their strength of character as well as their skills with bat and ball.

Jim Troughton

Now, against Yorkshire, first-team coach Jim Troughton will ask his players to lift themselves one more time this gruelling season – and he has no doubts about their appetite for the challenge.

“When you consider what has been thrown at us this season, this team has done nothing but punch above its weight,” he said. “The players really showed what they are about at Nottingham. To win the game after conceding 498 was real testament to their strength of character as well as their skills with bat and ball.

“There were some happy people in the dressing-room after the match and some very tired people, coming off the back of six sessions in the dirt against Essex. They had every right to be proud of that achievement. To put in a performance like that over four full days near the end of a long, tough season was a brilliant achievement.

“Now we want to finish strongly against Yorkshire. We have a couple of days to recoup and rest the new niggles which we picked up against Notts. George Garrett tweaked a quad, Matt Lamb tweaked his side and Sam Hain got hit on the head right at the end so we have to make sure he passes all the tests to be fit.

“So there are a few things we need to think about before but that’s been the way of it all season and these guys have kept hitting back.”

The 1951 title decider

That match, at Edgbaston in late July, was not quite the direct, winner-takes-all affair in prospect at Taunton next week but the Bears, clear at the top, knew that victory over the White Rose would effectively secure them the title.

It was a mouth-watering match and the cricket-lovers of the region turned up in droves. The three days – Saturday July 28, Monday 30th and Tuesday 31st – attracted 43,000 spectators, surpassing the previous record for a championship match at Edgbaston of 32,000 set for the visit of Lancashire the previous week.

It was a huge match – and Warwickshire had a stroke of luck that it coincided with the fourth Test between England and South Africa at Headingley. That meant that four Yorkshire stars – Len Hutton, Frank Lowson, Willie Watson and Don Brennan – were on international duty back at their home county ground. Against much-weakened opposition, the Bears took full advantage.

Yorkshire’s depleted batting line up spent all the first day inching to 249 all out from 126.4 overs. Eric Hollies, on his way to 145 championship wickets in the season, sent down 40.4-21-63-1 while Kiwi paceman Tom Pritchard, heart as big as a lion, ploughed through 30-9-62-3.

In reply, Warwickshire were given a strong foundation by second-wicket pair Dick Spooner (65) and Jimmy Ord (67) whose stand of 134 paved the way for captain Tom Dollery to attack. A week earlier Dollery had scored a superb unbeaten 108 under pressure against Lancashire to steer his side out of trouble. This time his 111 assured the Bears a lead of 113 as White Rose spearhead Fred Trueman made little impression with 19-2-67-1.

That lead was more than enough as Yorkshire’s batting folded for 97 second time round. Hollies took five for 47 before 21-year-old slow-left-armer Ray Weeks sped Warwickshire to victory on a worn surface by taking out the tail in a spell of 5.5-1-3-3.

Warwickshire’s second championship title was all but secured. Reflecting on the achievement the following year, Wisden stated that “The membership and gate receipts were the biggest in the history of the county and if the winning of the Championship inspires a love of cricket in the youth of Warwickshire everyone will be happy.”

It is up to each generation to inspires the next – and Dollery’s team certainly did that.
