Report: Yorkshire Vikings vs Bears Men, Vitality Blast

All-rounder Ed Barnard hit an excellent middle-order 67 and then helped close things out with the ball as the Bears defended a 206-run target to claim a crucial Vitality Blast win over Yorkshire at Headingley.

Barnard’s 40-ball knock was the centrepiece of a 205 for eight total, which also included a telling late assault of 76 runs in the last five overs from the lower order.

Pakistan seamer Hassan Ali hit 22 not out off eight balls and later struck twice with the ball, sealing a third win in six in the North Group – this by 32 runs.

Yorkshire, for whom New Zealand quick Will O’Rourke struck three times with the ball, looked well placed to reel in the target thanks to opener and captain Dawid Malan’s 65 off 34 balls. But his fourth successive fifty in this competition was not enough to prevent a fourth defeat in six, the hosts finishing on 173 for five.

Alex Davies, who elected to bat, guided George Hill’s seam to short third – 20 for one in the second over.

Dom Bess, with his first ball, and O’Rourke then removed Dan Mousley bowled, and Sam Hain caught at point as the Bears ended the powerplay at 51 for three.

Tom Latham and Barnard steadied through accumulation to reach halfway with the score on 85.

However, the former fell on 24 at the start of the 12th when he top-edged England Lion Hill to long-leg.

That was the first of three wickets in successive overs as the Bears slipped back into trouble at 123 for six in the 14th over. Moeen Ali was lbw to Jack White for nine and Kai Smith caught behind off O’Rourke’s pace.

But their batters refused to die wondering on a belter of a batting pitch.

George Garton whacked two sixes over long-on as 21 came off Bess in the 16th before he skewed O’Rourke to deep cover in the 18th – 160 for seven. Sandwiched in between, Barnard reached a 32-ball fifty.

Barnard fell caught in the deep off Jack White in the penultimate over, which ended with two Hassan sixes to help the Bears get above 200.

Will Luxton skewed Hassan’s pace high to mid-off in the second over of a chase which advanced at pace.

Malan hit two slog-swept sixes over mid-wicket off Danny Briggs’ spin in the fifth over, and the score reached 56 for one after six.

Garton dropped Malan at deep midwicket on 29 off Briggs in the seventh over, though there was success for the Bears when Moeen’s second ball bowled Adam Lyth – 66 for two in the eighth.

Malan aside, Yorkshire’s batting has been sketchy this campaign. So by now, it felt like Malan or bust for the hosts.

By the time he reached his latest fifty, off 29 balls, the hosts were 100 for two early in the 12th over.

James Wharton provided impressive third-wicket support in sharing 55 with his skipper, though left-armer Briggs struck a key blow in the 13th when he had Malan caught at short fine-leg off a skied top-edged sweep – 121 for three.

Yorkshire needed 65 off the last five overs before Mousley’s off-spin removed powerful Australian Will Sutherland, the target becoming a stiffer 47 off three overs at 159 for four.

Wharton fell for 37 in the penultimate over before Barnard’s seam – nought for 18 from three overs – closed out the last, defending 39.

Bears all-rounder Ed Barnard said, “It was a great game of cricket. We did well to scrap up to 200 from the position we were in. We lost a few more wickets early and through the middle than we’d have liked. But it shows that we bat all the way down. George Garton coming in and giving us the impetus and then Hassan Ali getting those runs at the end.

“It was a really good pitch, but we knew when it was up over 10 runs per over it’s a hard chase. And if we could get a good couple of overs in, we were right in it.

“In most games we go into, we look to go to 200 (total). With a short boundary and a quick outfield, that was on our minds at the start. We re-adjusted through the middle but scored 60 or 70 in the last five overs.

“(Career best 67). I haven’t had that much chance to get in early in T20. I’ve always batted quite low down the order. This year, getting a bit of a chance up the order, I’ve really enjoyed that responsibility. I feel I play spin well, so it suits my game.

“It would have been nice to get a few more at the end. I felt like I left a few out there. But I’m just happy that I’ve helped to win a game of cricket.”

Preview: Yorkshire Vikings vs Bears Men, Vitality Blast

Dan Mousley is “delighted to be back” with the Bears after a successful time away from the squad playing for a Professional County Club Select XI and the England Lions.

Mousley featured in two red-ball fixtures against Zimbabwe and India A, where he scored twin hundreds, the second being his maiden First-Class Century.

Mousley said, “The opportunity to play against India A was great, and I wanted to go there and try to perform, and it went pretty well for me personally.

“I was very happy, it felt like a monkey off my back, if anything. There’s been opportunities here where I probably should have got hundreds and I haven’t.”

“The Zimbabwe game gave me a lot of confidence. I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to play them, and then India A had such a good attack, a lot of test boys in, so to get runs in that is really pleasing.

“I think mainly it shows me that I know I can do it, so it gives me that confidence coming back to the Bears now, and showing to myself I can really compete at the top level.”

The Bears welcomed Mousley back ahead of last Friday’s fixture with Yorkshire, alongside the addition of overseas Hassan Ali, who created a memorable moment in Bears history with a hat-trick over Derbyshire Falcons on Sunday.

Mousley said, “I’m delighted to be back, I love playing for the Bears, as a kid, it’s all I’ve wanted to do is play for England and play for Warwickshire.”

“I know it’s not gone perfectly for us up to now, but we’re actually in a really good place.

“It’s a newer squad, with some new additions, and I think we’ll get there. We’ve played some really good cricket.

“We were really clinical against Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Last night didn’t go our way, but there were so many positives to take from that game.”

Dan was excellent yesterday evening, scoring a pacey 68 off 42 balls to lead the charge against Northants. Unfortunately, the Bears fell short of their total, but Mousley looks to have found his best form when coupled with his two exceptional red ball performances.

Mousley said, “I feel like I’ve been hitting them really well, it just hasn’t gone my way at the start of the season.

“Matt Walker and I have been speaking a lot about it, and it’s just cricket. Sometimes you feel a million dollars and get nothing, and then you can feel terrible and get runs.

“I felt really good last night, and feel like I’m hitting them really well at the moment.”

The Bears head to Yorkshire tomorrow with the opportunity to do the double over them in the space of eight days.

Yorkshire are currently sixth in the table, one spot above the Bears, marginally ahead on run-rate.

Mousley said, “They’ve got so much international experience, mixed with some great young talent. Will Luxton and Adam Wharton played really well here, and they’re a powerful outfit.

“We beat them here (Edgbaston) and I thought we were really clinical. Although we won in the last over, I feel like we were in control for the majority of the game.”

After the game in Headingley, the Bears have a quick turnaround where they will face Notts Outlaws at Edgbaston on Saturday night.

The Bears are sandwiched between their two weekend rivals in the Vitality Blast table, and have the opportunity to leave them in their wake if they achieve two victories.

The Bears will certainly be looking to take down the Outlaws, who chased a personal best of 227 to win in the opening round.
