Report: Bears v Somerset, Second XI T20

George Garton took 2/25 as the Bears T20 preparation started at the Edgbaston Community Sports Ground.

The left-armer seamer, who was recruited over the winter on a three-year deal, also added 21 with the bat as he prepares for a new life as a Bear.

The 27-year-old bowled two overs in the powerplay and another pair at the back end of the innings, showcasing the skills that earned him an England cap in 2022.

Garton, alongside fellow new signing Richard Gleeson, will join a pace attack that includes Hassan Ali, Olly Hannon-Dalby, Aamir Jamal, Craig Miles and Chris Woakes.

Choosing to bat, an experienced Somerset, led by Will Smeed and Ben Green (both 49), reached 192/9, a target too far for the youthful Bears.

In reply, Sunil Gunarathne top scored with 31 as the hosts fell 50 runs short. Nevertheless, it was a valuable exercise that gave Jake Lintott, plus the young hot shots, an opportunity to impress ahead of the Blast season.

Lintott, who has 58 T20 wickets for the Bears, took 3/34 as he looks to resume the impressive spin family of all-time leading T20 wicket-taker Danny Briggs, Dan Mousley and Rob Yates.
