Report: Essex Women vs Bears Women, Vitality Blast

Sterre Kalis blitzed a 23-ball half-century, but it wasn’t enough as the Bears lost by 19 runs under the Duckworth Lewis Stern method to Essex in Chelmsford in the Vitality Blast women’s competition.

Essex batted first with Lissy Macleod (44), Grace Scrivens (36) and an explosive 27 from Maddie Penna lifting the hosts to 154-4 in a game reduced to 14 overs-a-side by rain.

Kalis plundered 52 in 23 balls in reply, but her pyrotechnics came too late as Esmae MacGregor (3-32) and Sophia Smale (2-13) helped restrict the visitors to 139-8.

Scrivens survived a huge lbw shout first ball from Issy Wong, replays suggesting the England Lions’ captain from last winter was lucky to escape the dreaded umpire’s finger.

The Essex skipper made good use of the reprieve, driving and sweeping forcefully to clock up eight boundaries in quick time. At the other end Lauren Winfield-Hill’s sumptuous straight drive helped raise the 50-partnership in 31 balls.

Charis Pavely ended the fun, luring Scrivens down the pitch to be stumped by Abbey Freeborn. The batter hadn’t reached the pavilion before a cloudburst drove the players from the field.

When play resumed 80 minutes later, Winfield-Hill perished caught at square leg off Millie Taylor, but Penna caught the mood, launching the night’s first six over the mid-wicket stand and adding four fours in a brutal 12-ball effort.

Even when she fell to Katie George’s boundary catch, Macleod smote five fours as 57 came off the last four overs.

Davina Perrin, fresh from her 87 against Durham on Sunday, set the tone for the chase, pulling the first ball for four, and plundering three more boundaries from the next over bowled by Scriven.

One shot too many saw her hole out at mid-on off Kate Coppack, but Essex missed out on a second scalp in the powerplay when Wong, promoted up the order, was reprieved on 11, a skier dropped at mid-off by Scrivens. The drop didn’t prove expensive with the England all-rounder caught soon afterwards from the bowling of the in-form MacGregor, who scattered the stumps of the dangerous Laura Harris later in the same over.

Sterre Kalis played the knock of the night, twice clearing the ropes as she raced to 50 with five fours and two sixes, but by the time she became one of two late wickets for Sophia Smale from the game’s penultimate ball, the cause was lost.

Warwickshire opener Davina Perrin said: “It was a big ask to get that score. They put on a decent total, batted really well and ran well between the wickets.

“From our perspective if you’d said we’d get 139 from 14 overs, we’d have been happy with that score.  We showed a lot of intent and Sterre’s 50 was top class.

“As disappointing as it is when you lose, we’re going to regroup. There’s so many games to come.

“It’s going all right. I’ve got to keep backing my strengths, recognising bowlers are going to come at you harder and being more tactical in the way they are going about things.

I’m up for the game of cat and mouse 100 percent. Cricket is a very technical and tactical game anyway, but you have to play the game that is in front of you everyday”.

Preview: Essex Women vs Bears Women, Vitality Blast

Head Coach Ali Maiden said Australian import Laura Harris is like having a “super hero” in the side following the Bears’ first victory in the Vitality Blast over Durham last Friday at Edgbaston.

Laura Harris struck a record-breaking 16-ball half-century on her home debut, including 8 fours and 3 sixes.

Maiden said, “It’s like having a superhero, you feel like she’s unbeatable. She is human, she will fail occasionally, and things won’t happen all the time.

“But her impact in that game was brilliant. Getting her in at the right time is important because of the way that she plays, and I think we got it spot on tactically.

“I personally don’t think there’s anyone else in the world that can do that, and we’ve got her in our team.”

The Bears mirrored their Metro Bank One Day Cup opening round tie against Hampshire by also tying their first game in Nottingham against the Blaze.

With their opponents seemingly cruising to victory on a good batting wicket, the highly disciplined Bears fought back exceptionally to share the spoils on Vitality Blast day one.

They followed it up with their first victory of the professional T20 era, beating Durham thanks to Harris’s half-century, and home-grown talent Davina Perrin looking assured in her T20 best of 87 off 61 balls.

Maiden said, “It was fantastic, we played brilliantly as a team, it was great to win our first home game of the competition and play that well.

“Laura Harris was world-class. It was a good wicket and we were challenged by Suzie Bates and Bess Heath’s partnership, but we held our nerve, fought hard and claimed an easy victory in the end.”

Bears Women are top of the Vitality Blast table and will be looking to consolidate their position against Essex before heading into a jam-packed weekend with two fixtures against Somerset and Lancashire on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

The Bears have already had success in Chelmsford this year with Em Arlott hitting her maiden professional century on the way to setting 289 in their 50 overs, before bowling Essex out for 181 in return.

Maiden said, “Every game is a new game, that’s sport. We have to approach it the same way we did the last game.

“Prepare properly, don’t take anything for granted and go through the same processes.

“They’re a good unit. They (Sunrisers) won the 50-over competition last year, so they have experience of winning.

“Grace Scrivens is a good captain, and they’ll be a tough outfit because they’ll all contribute.”

Injury Update: Brewer in recovery following surgery

Chloe Brewer is in recovery following surgery on her hamstring from an injury sustained in the Bears Women fixture against the Blaze at Edgbaston last month.

Brewer suffered an injury early in the Bears Women’s season, going down in the field when chasing a ball towards the boundary.

Brewer made an excellent start to life as a Professional Bear, scoring 44 in a crucial partnership with Em Arlott, who went on to score 130, which helped them secure victory against Essex in the Metro Bank One Day Cup (ODC).

The 22-year-old had also made a significant impact with the ball, having taken 3/18 in the same game against Essex and 3/40 against Hampshire in the season ODC opener.

Head of Performance Laura MacLeod said, “She’s 3 weeks post a hamstring repair and early in her recovery, but progressing as expected”.

Brewer is still in and around the Bears Women’s camp and may feature on commentary in upcoming games for the Bears.
