Report: Gloucestershire v Bears, Women's T20 - Match One

Bears Women won their first T20 match of the day against Gloucestershire Women by 120 runs.

Ahead of the fixture, the Bears were sitting top of the Group 3 table after three wins and one defeat in the campaign so far.

In their penultimate game of the round-robin ground stage, the Bears ran out comfortable winners after a brilliant batting display led by Captain Marie Kelly, who top-scored with 99 off 61 balls.

The openers put on first-wicket partnership of 111, before Evelyn Jones was first out for 39 – but at this point the Bears were in the driving seat and looked set to build a big total.

Kelly carried on her fine batting display but fell agonisingly short of a well-deserved century, hitting 17 fours and one six along the way, as the Bears closes their 20 overs on 190/8.

A very disciplined bowling display by the Bears restricted Gloucestershire to just 70 all out in reply. Georgia Davis (5/14) led the way taking an exceptional five wickets.

Hannah Baker (2/10) and Anisha Patel (1/7) took the other wickets as the Bears won their first game of the day by a comfortable 120 runs.

Preview: Gloucestershire v Bears, Women's T20

Warwickshire Women conclude their Vitality Blast group campaign with a double header against Gloucestershire at Thornbury on Monday  (11am and 3pm).

Dominic Ostler’s side will be looking to build on their three wins out of four games so far ahead of the Finals Day at Portland Road on May 8. Having won one and lost one in their opener again Wales, the Bears won both games against Somerset, by 49 runs and 26 runs, at Taunton last weekend.

Eve Jones’ stunning 93 set up the first win before the second was sealed by seven wickets from leg-spinners Hannah Baker and Anisha Patel.

It was a powerful day’s work from Ostler’s team and the coach was delighted with not just his team’s quality but their resilience.

“The first game was a textbook performance. Eve batted brilliantly and there were other good contributions around her to take us to an imposing total. Then the girls backed it up really with the ball and in the field and we won comfortably

Dominic Ostler

“The second game was a very different type of win. Batting first, we were 30 for seven but Georgia Davies and Liz Russell dug in and got us to 100. They kept us in the game and then everybody bowled really well, Issy Wong and Georgia setting the tone with the new ball and then Anisha and Hannah taking seven wickets.

“There are always things to work on and improve but there were a lot of good things to take from the two games. Now we want to finish off the group with two more wins on Monday and if we can do that, with our run rate, we should finish top of the group.”
