Report: Bears Women v The Blaze, Vitality Blast

The Blaze, 159 for 6, beat Warwickshire 158 for 8, by four wickets.

Warwickshire Bears were unable to end their difficult start to the Vitality Blast campaign as an in-form The Blaze side claimed a four-wicket victory at Edgbaston.

The Bears posted 158 for eight after a promising start from openers Abi Freeborn and Meg Austin, but The Blaze chased down the target with four balls remaining to maintain their perfect start to the competition.

Put in to bat, the Bears made an excellent start as Freeborn and Austin added 50 in just 32 balls before building a 95-run partnership from 62 deliveries. Austin struck 44 from 31 balls before lifting Georgia Elwiss to long on, while Freeborn continued her strong start to the campaign with 56 from 45 balls – her second half-century in three games.

The Blaze hit back strongly in the middle overs as Lucy Higham removed Georgia Redmayne and Charis Pavely in the same over to slow the scoring rate. Charli Knott also impressed in the field with three catches, while Grace Ballinger claimed three for 24 against her former side.

Amu Surenkumar provided late impetus with 27 from 15 balls as the Bears closed on 158 for eight, although the visitors’ disciplined attack ensured the innings lost momentum after the halfway stage.

The Blaze started their reply aggressively through former Bear Marie Kelly, who struck 45 from 32 balls after taking 16 runs from the opening over. Tammy Beaumont fell early, but Kelly and Knott added 73 to keep the chase on course.

Surenkumar briefly swung momentum back towards the Bears with two wickets in an over, removing both Knott and Kelly, and the home side continued to battle as Georgia Elwiss and Ella Claridge were also dismissed during the chase.

Emma Jones’ unbeaten 27 from 16 balls ultimately guided The Blaze home, despite late wickets for Millie Taylor, as the visitors reached 159 for six with four balls to spare.

The Bears will now look to regroup quickly ahead of their next Vitality Blast fixture as they continue to battle through a challenging period with injuries and international absences affecting the squad.
