On Friday 16 August, Warwickshire Cricket Foundation hosted their first Girls National Programmes Cricket Festival at Wellesbourne Cricket Club.

Girls aged 11 or younger from local clubs including Snitterfield, Rowington and Wellesbourne gathered on a scorching hot day at Wellesbourne.

With more girls playing the game at a younger age, the number of girls participating in National Programmes All Stars and Dynamos has increased, as has the demand for more softball girls cricket across the county.

The day began with a group warmup, followed by a rotation of batting, bowling, and fielding skills. The afternoon was filled with both continuous and pairs cricket games.

Gabby Basketter, Women & Girl’s Club Development Officer, said “We had 25 girls attend the festival, but most importantly, we provided an opportunity for the girls who participated in the National Programme this year to play cricket for the entire day..”

“Following Friday’s success, we plan on organising similar days throughout the summer next year, providing more opportunity for young girls to continue playing cricket once national programmes finished.”
