Just before Christmas, Fillongley Cricket Club were awarded the title of Ortus Energy UK’s Greenest Ground at The Cricketer magazine Awards.
This competition aims to recognise and reward cricket clubs that have made significant progress in reducing their environmental impact and promoting a greener future for the sport.
The panel of judges evaluated participating clubs based on several criteria, including energy efficiency, waste management, biodiversity enhancement, community engagement, and overall environmental stewardship.
This year, The Cricketer Magazine partnered with Ortus Energy to provide a prize of £500, which can be used to develop more sustainable initiatives.
Fillongley Cricket Club received praise from the Warwickshire Cricket Foundation for their commitment to the environment back in 2022 when they began their sustainability journey. Three years ago they planted trees and wildflowers, regenerated ponds, and created new habitats for insects.
The work at Fillongley continues to thrive, largely thanks to Stephen Gardner, who has been a key driving force behind its initiatives.
Since becoming operational in May, Fillongley Cricket Club’s solar panels have successfully reduced the energy bills, saved the equivalent of 1.9 tonnes of CO2, and generated an income of £220.
Fillongley Cricket Club have also installed an 18-panel, 7kW photovoltaic (PV) system on the roof of their pavilion. This system includes a battery and a charger that can be used to power electric mowers.
We would like to congratulate Stephen and everyone at Fillongley Cricket Club for their commitment to making environmentally sustainable changes at the club.
