On Thursday 9 January, schools were invited to Edgbaston to experience what it’s like to be a leader in cricket.

Led by Secondary School Development Officer Zak Sinkinson, both Bartley Green School and Hall Green School attended and were introduced to the leadership course.

For some students, it was their first time playing cricket, and for all, it was their first experience coaching the game.

Over the next six months, the Foundation, in partnership with Chance to Shine, will work with three schools to deliver the Girls Leadership programme.

Each academic year, schools are selected to provide girls with a different perspective on cricket. The programme offers girls opportunities to develop leadership skills, such as leading warm-ups, scoring, umpiring, and delivering sessions, with the support of coaches from the Warwickshire Cricket Foundation.

During the session, players Georgia Davis and Abbey Freeborn from the Warwickshire Women Bears visited the schools.

We spoke with Lexie and Phoebe from Bartley Green School about their involvement in the programme.

Phoebe said: “Taking part in the girls’ leadership course would be something I’m interested in.”

Lexie said: “I’ve only played cricket at my old school, mainly in casual games, so I’ve felt a bit nervous today. I’ve enjoyed batting and hitting the ball really hard.”

For most schools, the leadership programme will commence after the April half term. To learn more about the programme, click here.
