For the third year in a row, we proudly hosted our first Schools Open Day of the year last Friday welcoming over 500 children from primary and secondary schools across the region to Edgbaston Stadium for a day full of cricket, sunshine, and smiles.

Schools were invited as part of the Red Ball Showcase game where Warwickshire played against Hampshire in the Rothesay County Championship.

Our School’s Open Days aim to inspire the next generation of cricketers by giving young people the opportunity to experience Edgbaston Stadium, while engaging in a range of fun and interactive activities.

A particular highlight of the day saw students from Wheelers Lane Primary School in Kings Heath take to the outfield during the lunch break, where they had the opportunity to play cricket on the very pitch used by the pros.

Throughout the day, students headed to the activation zone to take part in the Bowlathon, where they could test their bowling accuracy and even bowl at their friends.

Adding to the lively atmosphere, balloon modellers roamed the stands, offering students and teachers the chance to take home a custom balloon creation of their choice.

Joshua Howells-Holloway, Stadium Programmes Manager at the Warwickshire Cricket Foundation, said “It was fantastic to see so many young people enjoying themselves at our first Schools Open Day of the year. We want to make greater use of this iconic venue by bringing more people here, not just to watch cricket, but to showcase the wide range of opportunities available in sport, both on and off the field.”

“We’re excited to welcome even more schools in June for the White Ball Open Day, where Bears Women will take on Essex Women in a Vitality T20 Blast game.”
