More than 175 young people from local communities came together this half term to celebrate Diwali through an exciting take on cricket.

The majority of those who attended have previously taken part in the Foundation’s Cricket Cities programme.

The celebrations featured two sessions, morning and afternoon, with a dedicated staff session held at lunchtime, ensuring everyone had the opportunity to take part.

Participants, ranging in age from 6 to 15, enjoyed a variety of cricket based activities including batting, bowling, catching, and throwing drills, all designed to encourage participation and a love for the game.

The Glow in the Dark Cricket experience transformed the traditional sport into a vibrant and visually striking celebration of Diwali’s spirit of light.

Alongside the sporting activities, attendees took part in a range of cultural experiences, including Diwali themed colouring and quizzes, offering a creative and educational way to learn about the festival’s significance.

Authentic Indian treats, including samosas, pakoras, bhajis, and traditional sweets, added to the festive atmosphere and provided a taste of Diwali’s rich culinary heritage.

To close the cricket, everyone was invited to light a candle, symbolising Diwali’s message of light overcoming darkness.

Simran Riat, Community Participation Officer, said “It was great to see so many people from the local community come together to take part in the Diwali celebration. The turnout shows how much interest there is in events like this and how cricket can continue to connect and engage people.”

We would like to thank everyone who joined the celebration and wishes all a very Happy Diwali.
