Edgbaston Cricket Education Programme with Sandwell College

Warwickshire CCC and Sandwell College have partnered up to deliver a two-year further education course delivered in collaboration with Warwickshire Cricket Foundation.

The programme is designed to support a career in professional sport, delivered from the iconic Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham.

What does the course involve?

The programme offers the unique opportunity to train and play cricket at the world-famous Edgbaston Stadium and learn from professional coaches, staff and players at Warwickshire County Cricket Club.

Your experience on the Edgbaston Cricket Education Programme will include:
• Pearson BTEC Level 3 in Sports Development and Coaching (Equivalent to 3 A-Levels)
• Level One Foundation Coach in Cricket (ECB Level 1)
• Level Two ECB Coach (time/age dependent)
• First Aid Qualification
• Workforce Hub/Volunteering Opportunities
• 3- 6 Hours Cricket Training in the Indoor Cricket Centre
• Winter Indoor Fixtures
• Summer Outdoor Fixtures (AoC and Colleges National Tournament)

Entry Requirements:

• Four GCSEs at Grade 4/C and above, including English and Maths (lower entry qualifications may be accepted if you do further study alongside the programme)
• An interest in cricket and a passion for working in the sports industry whether that be as a player, coach or any other role, is essential for this course.

The vocational course will cover the modules below which will be integrated and delivered through qualified lecturers in theory lessons as well as practical sessions and guest speakers from Edgbaston and Warwickshire.

  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Sports Development

Year 2:

  • Sport Psychology
  • Sports Injuries
  • Nutrition
  • Sports Massage
  • Research Project
  • Applied Coaching Skills

The course also allows students to do their ECB Support Coach in the first year and ECB Foundation Coach in their second year.

Where can I go next?

Successful completion of the course provides learners with the equivalent to 3 A-Level’s which will provide learners the opportunity to progress to University to study course such as Physical Education, Teaching, Sports Therapy, Cricket Coaching and Sports Development as well as progress onto a foundation degree (accredited by University of Wolverhampton).

There is also the possibility of progressing onto apprenticeships within the sports industry in roles such as grass roots sports coach and sports development, which allow students to get paid and gain experience as well as gain a qualification. Or alternatively, going straight into the world of work using the industry qualifications (EBC Level 1 and First Aid) as a cricket coach working in schools and coaching companies.
