It was apparent during those discussions that Stephen and the Fillongley CC management team had a vision of undertaking this development in a sustainable way, considering the impact on the environment, and working alongside experts at the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. This prompted a visit to Fillongley CC to see the results of their work, involving a very pleasant morning in the countryside with Stephen Gardner and his wife Sandra. The discussion centred around the following points.

The vision to develop the second pitch at Fillongley CC in an environmentally friendly manner.

How this vision was achieved, particularly through the involvement of the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust.

Practical steps the club has taken to implement the vision, including footpath diversion, tree planting, development of a wildflower area, pond regeneration and insect habitat.

The impact of the development on the club, hand in hand with cricket.

Looking forward and keeping the momentum going.

The Vision

The initial vision related solely to cricket – to develop the adjoining agricultural field at Fillongley CC into a second pitch where the third team, the women’s team and other club teams could play, thus bringing the whole club together on site. Once the lease on the field was agreed, the outfield was sown in March 2021 and the artificial strip (a result of the club’s ECB Country Grant Fund application at the end of 2021) was laid in time for the 2022 cricket season.

The vision of bringing the club together and making it easier for players to move between teams, bring new players through and enable greater cohesion, has been achieved. In addition to achieving the cricketing objectives, Stephen was also the driving force behind a parallel vision of undertaking the development in an environmentally friendly way. When asked about his views on the environment, Stephen is understated – “I enjoy a bit of gardening” – but his knowledge of birds, plants and wildlife suggests a much deeper connection with nature and the environment that has spurred him on to deliver the environmental vision too. “To be honest, I was most passionate about getting the 3rd team back here, but I wanted to do it in a way that was environmentally friendly. This really is just a wonderful place to be and to play cricket, so I wanted us to enhance that environment with the development of the second pitch.”

Achieving the Vision

The first step was to convince fellow committee members and others at the club to buy into the vision. Stephen describes how this happened. “I managed to convince people that bringing the 3rd team back to the club was important and that having a lease on the field next door was an asset of benefit to the club. Some said it couldn’t be done and that we couldn’t afford it, but now they can see what can be achieved by working alongside other organisations and being creative. Generally, it’s easier to get people on committees to agree to short term projects but long term projects can be more problematic.”

In the early stages of the development, the club had already made a commitment to the environment by purchasing packs of trees for planting from the Woodland Trust. The initial plan had been to involve local schools in the planting exercise, but Covid restrictions meant this wasn’t possible and so club members planted the trees themselves. “At that stage,” explains Stephen, “We had taken the decision to plant trees, but hadn’t yet accessed any expertise. That changed when I contacted the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust (WWT). Tim Precious-Li from the WWT came to the club to meet with me and the landowner. He explained to us the potential for the habitat. People were then able to understand what was possible. The detailed report prepared by the WWT meant we had a clear plan ourselves, but it also gave us the basis to share our vision with other bodies such as the Parish Council, local Council and the Highways Agency. The support the WWT then gave us to implement the plan has been invaluable.”

Implementation

Implementing the plan drawn up by the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust inevitably started with gaining approval from the local Council to change the use of the field from agricultural to sports use. Approval was granted on the basis the development was enhancing the environment. The local Parish Council was also supportive of the plan. The next major obstacles were;

gaining approval for the public footpath that ran diagonally across the new pitch to be diverted round the edge of the site,

overcoming objections about access.

These objectives were achieved after considerable liaison with the Rights of Way Team and the Highways Agency, clearing the way for the rest of the WWT plan to be implemented as detailed below.

Tree Planting & Hedges

Tree planting is a key component of Fillongley CC’s environmental plan. Even before the involvement of the WWT, trees obtained from the Woodland Trust were planted around the ground and at the bottom gate where the public footpath enters the site. This initial mixed woodland pack consisted of mountain ash, silver birch, hazel, oak and hawthorn.

The tree planting initiative shifted up a gear once the WWT team had completed its survey and was able to assess the requirements. One key issue was drainage. The cricket club is at the top of a hill and from there water drains down into the village, causing a potential flooding risk in the Bournebrook after heavy rain. The objective was to invest in tree planting at the cricket club (and redeveloping the pond – see below) to catch the water and slow down its flow into the village. This meant the WWT was able to carry out this work with funding from the Bournebrook Flood Reduction Scheme.

The result is a splendid array of trees and hedging around the ground. Tree varieties include the rare black poplar and evergreen oak. Consideration has been given to the placement of new trees at regular intervals along the length of the hedge. This inevitably makes cutting the hedge more difficult but is much better for the environment. Likewise, the WWT was also able to advise about cutting the beech, hawthorn and black thorn hedges in rotation to encourage greater blossoming.

There is also a dedicated habitat area at the foot of the second pitch, between the footpath and the pitch, where the club has planted fruit trees (including crab apple, pear and cherry). The aim of these fruit trees is to form a “Blossom Ring” which contributes towards continuity of food and habitat to a number of species throughout the year.

Wildflower Meadow and Insect Habitat

The WWT plan for the dedicated habitat area also included a wildflower meadow, which is in the process of being created. A plan for managing the wildflower meadow has been prepared by the WWT and funding for it has been provided by the Highways Agency as part of its funding of projects to create and manage habitats.

The current stage of development is one of leaving the meadow to develop, prior to removing the grass in July. Grass will hamper the development of the wildflowers but, until July, Stephen is restraining his enthusiastic grass strimmers at the club. “The Grounds team think it looks untidy, so I’m having to restrain them at the moment. We need to follow the plan so it’s a bit of a battle to make them wait until July.”

Even at this early stage, the wildflower meadow is showing lots of potential with cowslips and clover already in evidence.

As a habitat for insects too, the meadow will be invaluable. During the WCB visit there was plenty of cuckoo spit in the grass (the nursery ground for the juvenile yellow-green froghopper, or spittle bug). Going forward, the meadow’s habitat will be protected by fencing installed by the WWT to keep walkers and dogs on the footpath.

Pond Regeneration

At the far end of the second pitch, the land contains a pond. “The pond is a work in progress,” explains Stephen. “The pond was neglected for years and contained discarded settees, shopping trolleys and other rubbish. The Warwickshire Wildlife Trust tested the oxygen levels and basically found the pond was dead, mainly because of all the dead leaves that had smothered it. With the help of the WWT, we have set about opening the pond up. Our aim is to get some oxygen into the pond so that things can live there. The first step was for our member Phil Hammond to pull the settee and other debris out of the pond with some specialist equipment from his garage business.”

Gradually, the area around the pond is being cleared a section at a time. Some dead trees are being left in place to provide food and shelter for woodpeckers and insects. Work has stopped at the moment due to the nesting season and three weeks ago Stephen and Sandra saw a duck and ducklings on the pond, something they haven’t seen for years.

Around the pond, a ‘dead hedge’ has been constructed. This natural fence is predominantly made of dead branches, woven together to provide a thriving habitat for voles, newts, hedgehogs, shrews, toads and frogs. The dead hedge is an excellent counterpoint to the impressive new benches that line the perimeter of the ground. Built, purchased, donated and dedicated by members, these benches mark the 70th anniversary of the reforming of Fillongley CC after the Second World War. The benches were made by members Bill Blackmore and Will Rowlands, while the dedication plaques were made by groundsman Brendan Morgan. Both the benches and the environmental changes demonstrate the ‘can do’ attitude at Fillongley CC – no matter how big the challenge, they will find a way to get there.

The future

This summer Fillongley CC has unified the whole club in one location, with an impressive second pitch. Next summer, there will be a magnificent wildflower garden and a reoxygenated pond. Stephen Gardner and the committee aren’t sitting on their laurels, however. Stephen is keen to push on with making further changes to benefit the environment. He talks about the installation of solar panels, of storing electricity during the week for weekend fixtures, and of eventually using electric pitch mowers that can be recharged in between use. Ultimately, the plan will be to build changing facilities for the new pitch and, in developing the club house, great attention will be paid to environmental factors. Stephen also draws attention to the fact that Fillongley CC has signed up to the United Nations Sports for Climate Action commitment to sustainability in sport and encourages other clubs to do the same.

Summary

Stephen Gardner isn’t someone who would be instantly identifiable as an environmental activist. He is thoughtful and considered, logical and practical. It is his wife Sandra who gives an insight into the determination and the strategic vision that lie beneath the surface, how he developed the plan and managed to bring everyone at the club on board. Their joint achievement is remarkable, looks wonderful, and hopefully will inspire other clubs. Typically understated, Stephen agrees, “Yes, it would be nice if other clubs considered the environment and their surroundings when developing their facilities.”

Getting back to the cricket, Stephen Gardner is also proud of Fillongley CC’s excellent record in the National Village Cup over the last 70 years since the club was reformed. The club has reached the semi-final on three occasions. At the time of writing, Fillongley CC had won the area final in the 2022 Voncus National Village Cup, after bowling out Nether Whitacre CC in the final over of the game. The first national round will see them play Milford Hall CC on June 19th. Everyone at the Warwickshire Cricket Board wishes Fillongley CC success in the match – it’s a cricket club that packs a punch both on the pitch and in protecting the environment.

A recent Foundation visit to Fillongley CC has highlighted the lead this Warwickshire cricket club has taken in putting environmental considerations at the top of its agenda during the development of its second pitch at the club. By sharing their story of considerate development – including tree planting, wildflowers, pond regeneration, and insect habitat – […]

[7

post-4976","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-clubs

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
