As part of Children’s Mental Health Week, Birmingham Bears have launched the “It’s Good to Talk” Writing Competition in partnership with the National Literacy Trust.

The Bears are inviting primary school children, aged under 12, from across the region to write a poem or story around the theme of growing together.

At the Bears, we want to encourage players, staff and fans to express themselves – whether its on the field, at home, work or school. We want to create a space where people and different communities can come together, grow and talk.

Win special prizes

Winning entries will win some special prizes including a VIP day at a Birmingham Bears game.

Growing together is about growing emotionally and finding ways to help each other to grow. Challenges and setbacks can help us to grow and adapt and trying new things can help us to move beyond our comfort zone into a new realm of possibility and potential.

As part of the competition, children can produce a writing, poem or story – for example:

  • Shape Poem: Draw something the represents growth and fill it with words or a poem about growth or growing up. To help, we’ve put together a Bear shape that you can fill with your words or poem.
  • List Poem: Write a few lines to set the scene and then list things that represent growth. Can you pair some words together that rhyme?
  • Feelings Poem: Write a poem that describes how growing makes you feel, for example excited or nervous. Present this in a way that you want and feel.

To help with your entry, download our Shape Poem template that you can use and fill with words or a poem about growth or growing up.

Closing date for entries is 5pm on Friday 29 April. Entries will judged the following week with winners informed shortly after.

Winning entries will be displayed at Birmingham Bears games in 2022, on the big screen and TVs around Edgbaston Stadium, plus printed in our “It’s Good to Talk” book. Prizes will be awarded to selected winning entries including:

  • Your poem printed in our “It’s Good to Talk” book which will be distributed at games.
  • VIP for a day at a Birmingham Bears games in 2022, including premium seating, chance to go into the home dressing room and meet the players.
