Warwickshire County Cricket Club Captain Ed Barnard was pleased with the fight shown by his side after they battled to a draw against Glamorgan in the Rothesay County Championship, a result that sees them remain in title contention.
Warwickshire enduring a testing first two days at Edgbaston Stadium, but responded on day three to get themselves into a position to win before rain dampened the opportunity for either side to push for victory.
Barnard, who took over the reigns as Club Captain from Alex Davies prior to the 2026 campaign, was encouraged by what he saw from his side against a good Glamorgan outfit.
“I think at the end of the day we’re pretty happy to take 12 points away,” he said. “I think we probably weren’t quite at the races the first two days, but after that we were brilliant.
“We were excellent on day three. How the lower order battled with the bat got us past the follow on and up to an extra batting point.
“Then I thought how we bowled on day three was brilliant. We really controlled that rate with the short boundary and we came into day four with a chance of winning the game.
“This team has shown a lot of character and fight this year and I think it’s a really good sign moving forward that we can keep getting into positions to win games of cricket on day four.”
The result against Glamorgan sees Warwickshire sit five points off top spot in Division One of the Rothesay County Championship at the half-way point of the season, with there now being a three-week break before the competition returns.
Barnard has been impressed by the application of his players through the first six games of the campaign, which have put the Bears in position to challenge for the title later this season, five years after they last triumphed.
“I think we’ve fought and shown in every game that we’ve got the quality to be right up there,” he added.
“With both bat and ball, the lads have stuck their hands up at the right time, and like I say, every game of cricket so far, we’ve been in it on the last morning with a chance of winning.
“To come away with two wins, a few draws and just that one loss, we’re really pleased.
“We’re sat up there in the table, and we’ve got a good chance going into the second half.
“We’ve got some incredibly experienced players that know what they’re doing, so it’s been a joy to captain so far. We won’t rest on our laurels though. We want more.”
Warwickshire travel to North Marine Road Ground in Scarborough to face Yorkshire when the Rothesay County Championship returns from Friday 12 June to Monday 15 June.
