Warwickshire County Cricket Club Captain, Ed Barnard, is hoping his side can take early wickets on day two after Yorkshire made a strong start to their Rothesay County Championship fixture at Scarborough.

The Bears won the toss on the return of the County Championship after a three week break, and opted to bowl first, but were unable to make early in-roads.

A maiden First-Class century from opener Will Luxton was the catalyst for a strong day for the hosts, as his 167 off 261 balls helped Yorkshire to 386 for six at the close.

Yorkshire had been 377 for five, but two late wickets from Ethan Bamber and Olly Hannon-Dalby, brought the Bears back into the contest.

“Probably not our best day, but I think those couple of wickets late helped us into a better position,” he said.

“Hopefully we can come back and clean them up early in the morning.

“We’re not out of this game at all. Will [Luxton] showed that if you get in, you can score quickly and big. Hopefully we can do that in our innings.”

Barnard was the pick of the Warwickshire bowlers on the opening day, taking two wickets for 47 runs, with debutant Manav Suthar, who signed a short-term contract earlier this week, picking up his first two wickets for the Club, including the key wicket of Luxton.

Despite a difficult opening day, Barnard is optimistic his team can fire back in their first innings, on a ground notoriously good for scoring.

“We thought there was going to be a bit in the pitch, and I think there was. We probably didn’t get it quite right in those first two sessions with the ball,” he added.

“It’s always a good cricket wicket here. I’ve played here a couple of times, and it tends to be fast scoring. If someone gets in and plays well, like Will Luxton did, it can be hard to defend.”

Day two of the Rothesay County Championship match between Warwickshire and Yorkshire gets under way at 11:00am on Saturday 13 June at Scarborough Cricket Club.
