Warwickshire are scouring all corners of the county in their efforts to find the next generation of fast bowlers.

And talented seamer Ben Blakemore, aged 18, is one the latest prospects hoping to pursue his dream of playing professional cricket with the Bears.

Blakemore – who made two Second XI Championship appearances for Warwickshire last summer – has progressed through the Club’s Youth Pathway from Under-10s.

And he’s now been invited to gain valuable experience training with the senior professionals as part of his development.

“It’s great to be in and around the squad to learn from them,” said Blakemore, who plays Birmingham League Cricket with Kenilworth Wardens.

“To be able to come in and pick the pros’ brains on what they’re working on, even just basics like running technique and how they’re holding the ball, quite simple stuff, is helping me improve all the time.

“When I started off I was mainly a bowler but I’d say I’ve developed into more if an all-rounder. Last season was a breakout year for me. I played some second team games, and this year I’m really looking to progress, increase my pace, and follow my dream of making it as a pro cricketer.

“I take inspiration from the likes of Ben Stokes and other quick all-rounders. In the current Bears squad I’d say I’m most like Chris Woakes, in the way that I bowl. I’m not the quickest but I think I’ve got good shape.”

The next Chris Woakes! You heard it here first.

Blakemore featured in two Second XI Championship games in September, against Surrey and Somerset, and took three wickets.

He also appeared in five Under-18 County Championship matches in 2024, taking 13 wickets and hitting two half centuries.

Bears Bowling Coach Stuart Barmes, added: “As a coach I’m excited by any young bowler who wants to bowl quickly, has that intent, who runs athletically, efficiently, and who presents an upright seam.

“You might have to coach that. But it’s brilliant to give these young guys like Ben, possibly future Bears fast bowlers, the experience of working with the senior guys, giving them different experiences, laying the foundations, to interact and observe.

“The trick is as a coach knowing when. When is the right time to give them more opportunity, to get the most out of them.

“Ben has had some injuries but he’s showing good promise. We’ll keep helping him and hopefully he can push on and be someone we hear more about in the future.”
