Warwickshire’s pre-season preparation will take a very different turn this week when the first-team squad and management head for Thorney Island Barracks.
The Bears first-team squad and management travel to the army base in Hampshire tomorrow and will spend two and a half days there – much of it well outside their comfort zone.

The trip is designed to promote individual and team development and resilience in a series of situations planned by the army officers to confront the players with circumstances very far removed from cricket.
“It will be a very interesting two and a half days and we think the players and coaches will get a lot out of it,” said first-team coach Jim Troughton. “Exactly what awaits us even the management don’t know. It’s all being put together by the army guys.
“We do know that it will include one 24-hour exercise and the whole trip will give us a great chance to see how the guys handle situations outside their comfort zone.
“There will be aspects that stretch them mentally and physically, although within the context that these are professional sportsmen so we don’t want any injuries.
“We have worked the players very hard during the winter and they have responded to that really well but they are probably ready for something competitive and there will be competitive element to the trip.”
